Actually, there is plinth, on the side facing the wall oven. This picture shows the 3'x8' panel and base panels on the back and side, going down to the floor as a standard installation.

Neat tactic for producing a sleek island.

I want to use Applad black and white in a similar way, black bottom, white top. I'm just nervous about such a high contrast. The Nexus black-brown looks stylish and subtle. But I really fell in love with Applad black when I had chance to visit a store.
