Mission Statement: I would like my kitchen to have a contemporary look with access to more storage than currently is available.
I just recently found this website as I was looking for kitchen design ideas. There have been a lot of good ideas and suggestions.
I have 4 plans - existing layout, island plan, bar stool layout, and peninsula. The last 3 plans include a wall that would be built at the bottom of wall A. Wall D is mainly an open passage to a mud room/patio door entrance. I would like to keep it open because it lets in quite a bit of light.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. In addition, if someone has any experience in hauling a truck full of kitchen cabinets and could share it with me, I would truly be grateful. I live about 6 hours away from the nearest Ikea and I'm trying to determine if it would even be feasible to use Ikea cabinets.
I do have a full size pickup, 4WD, that I can use to haul but don't know if it can accommodate all the cabinet boxes. If not, then I'll have to see about renting a truck and that might blow my budget completely.

It may be a few days before I can reply to anyone.....big project at work and some other commitments.
Welcome! Glad you're here. I will be happy to take a look at your plans and provide comments for you later on this afternoon. There's a whole forum here on Long Distance Ordering, browse through that and you'll probably find some good info on hauling your kitchen. There's also the option of online ordering which includes delivery at fairly reasonable rates.
We drove to IKEA
Atlanta
in our S-10 intending to bring back what we could and have the rest shipped. They said that we could have them pull the entire order and what we couldn't fit, we could take back in to home delivery and set it up.
We ended up fitting the entire kitchen in the back of the truck and the extended cab:
Granted, it's not a big kitchen - six base cabinets, nine wall cabinets, a few big cover panels and extra doors, but we did it. I would think a full size pickup would do even better. I don't have the planner here at work, so I'm not sure exactly how big your kitchen is, but according to what they told me in Atlanta, if you ran out of space you could ship just those items.

Arethe new walls at the bottom of wall A going to be some kind of hallway connecting the two doors that were on your existing plan? Is that set in stone? Where do the other doors go? Are they actually doors, or just openings - if they are doors, will they be open most of the time or closed? I think I could get a better handle on your layouts with this info... Thanks!
The island configuration is not going to work...there are major bottlenecks with the angled island and the cooktop in the corner will be extremely awkward, not to mention problems with the adjacent wall cabinets.
The bar stool layout is also less than idea because of the angled range, although it would work with the range on the window wall.
Can I ask why you're going to build that little wall there? I'd really like to see a modified galley layout for you, with a long island.
Also, your fridge at 32 1/2 inches is a bit smaller than most fridges today, I think you should leave an opening for a 36" even if you don't currently have one, since when you go to replace it you may not be able to find a smaller width easily.
In your original configuration, you don't have a fridge or a dishwasher. Do you plan to include a dishwasher in your new kitchen?
And also, could you tell us a bit about your cooking, entertaining and family styles? How many people use the kitchen and for what, how frequently etc.
I created a plan for you with a galley style. Since you were maxed out on the # of files you are allowed under your ID, I saved it to my IKEA space. The userid is eva62@yahoo.com and the password is ikea2006
I used the height of the walls, which you have set at 10 feet, to add a second row of fan cabinets above the range area. You could use them for seasonal storage or leave the doors off for display. The cabinet above the fridge should align with the others but the planner software is a little persnickety about it. I think this plan gives you great storage with two large drawer units in the island plus three other 18" drawer units, as well as a larger fridge, dishwasher and seating for four. I'd recommend a soft curve on the seating end of the island rather than the straight in a row configuration.
The new walls will actually hide the entrance to the bathroom. I've always hated how the bathroom door was located in the kitchen next to the stove. So I though if I built a little hallway, no one would be able to see the bathroom from the kitchen. With the addition of those two walls, there would just be a little jog to get to the bathroom. With only the two of us living here, it's not a big deal.
Wall D is a "divider" between the kitchen and a mudroom. The bottom part of the wall is closed with the top open. I'm planning on removing the bottom part and just leave a couple of posts.
Is it possible to have the bathroom open into the mudroom and then close up that wall entirely? Some more info about the mudroom would be most helpful, it's possible you can incorporate some of that space into your kitchen area. What is that other window, opposite the current bathroom door? Is that a doorway, window or ??? Also, is this the only eating area in the house or is it more used for snacks and such, with another dining area used for sit-down meals?
If you could answer my other questions in the previous post as well, that would help a great deal.
Also, make sure you can remove that wall before you start demolishing it, your area might require permits if it is a bearing wall.
I'm with Eva, I think there might be a better solution to your bathroom problem.
Not knowing how you live, it may work well to fully open the kitchen into the mudroom. But in general this seems like an awkward solution. At least to me, mudroom = messy = private space. While kitchens, more and more, are becoming public, gathering space. Does the other door lead to living areas?
There is a lot of potential here, and I think you are on the right track by thinking about it and looking at different options...
I'm really reaching here, since some of the details are still unclear. I took Eva's galley and made it more into an L, assuming that you can get bathroom access somehow through the mudroom. Wall D could be as open or closed as you would like.
I am far from a planner whiz, just getting the hang of it. I think the island could work a little better but I'm not sure how to do it in the planner.
I tried saving it in my own account, and it kept putting it back in Eva's - it is in there now as kansas2. Eva I'm sorry about this, I'll try back later today and try to get it moved into mine.
