I am SO SO SO excited I found this board. I have been reading posts for hours, but on top of my joy, I found a picture of exactly what we have been wanting and didn't think was possible:
To answer your questions, yes, the wall cabinets are plenty strong enough for base cabinets, although IKEA now sells "shallow" base cabinets which are pretty much the wall cabinets with legs. They come in the 39" height, which is a few inches higher than standard base cabinets so you can create a raised bar, or the regular 30" base cabinet height to create a counterheight bar or island. Here's mine, I have two base cabinets back-to-back with two wall cabinets. This view is from the corner and shows the wall cabinets in the front (with the little oval knobs):
The cabinets are joined side by side with something called a ganging screw, they come with the cabinets. Essentially you drill through four of the shelf peg holes and slide a metal sleeve through and then insert a screw and tighten. Easy peasy!
I don't know when they started doing that...all I know is that they show up in the planner and have a different ID than the wall cabinets...BS1230 is the base shallow 12 inch cabinet and the wall cabinet is W1230. Who knows? Maybe torrus?
Thank you Eva for your help. Your kitchen is fabulous!
Question:
I think I understand how you join them side to side, but how do you join them back to back? Just punch holes where you would have gone through the predrilled holes? Also, do you get extras of the ganging screw or can I buy them?
You get four ganging screws per cabinet, so you'll have plenty. I have extras still! To gang the cabinets back to back, we used flat mending plates, two per pair on either side on the bottom. We cut a notch out of the backer board to slide the plates through and then screwed them in through the bottom of the cabinets. With the countertop it is solid as a rock.
