Hello everyone! This is my first post on the forum, but I have been reading many posts to try and learn more about kitchen layouts and to help me remodel my kitchen in my 1912 home. The current layout is not very efficient and there is much wasted opportunity I am sure. We are slightly hampered by the kitchen only being 7' wide at the narrowest end, which I think should preclude us from using full-depth cabinetry. The kitchen also has a pantry about 3 feet wide by 3 feet deep, with a vent running up through the back of it to the second floor.
My goal for this kitchen is to have it be a welcome place for entertaining. I would like guests to be able to fix themselves drinks without cutting through the work zone (usually the stove area in my experience). I was thinking about moving the fridge from its current location to where the stove is, and vice versa. This would put the cook out of the drink and snack fixing zone. I wish there were a better way to integrate the pantry too, as that is an awkward wall separating it from the kitchen proper.
I am gravitating towards Lidingo doors, as the current cabinets are white and I like the look. Appliances would be stainless steel, and I like the cooktop and wall oven look so I can store pans under the cooktop. However, I don't know if you can squeeze a high cab in here for a wall oven/microwave combo. Ceilings are 101"
Would anyone please be able to look at this diagram and give me suggestions? I feel like I am in a rut and would really appreciate the advice.
Hi Dustin, Welcome to IkeaFans. It's kind of hard to accurately visualize your kitchen from your plan, would you be able to create a file in the Ikea planner and post it here? That would allow people to play with it. Photos of the room would be good too if possible. Also, can doors or walls move at all?
That is a good idea. I have a Mac so it's not that easy for me to use the planner, but I have run it on my old PC. I'll try to mock it up and publish some jpgs this weekend so it's more clear.
I'm planning a galley kitchen too. Here are a couple of suggestions for you:
- you might want to consider putting a cabinet over the fridge. If you choose a deep cabinet, it makes your fridge look a bit more built in and attached to the kitchen.
- in your bank of cabinets, you have one cabinet that does not have any drawers. Was this intentional? Might look a bit more cohesive if you chose a cabinet with at least a top drawer. These top drawers always come in handy anyway.
Not much time here but I strongly recommend decent sized counters on both sides of the cook surface--which probably means moving the range to a different location....
Have you considered opening up your pantry to the rest of the room?
Oh I'm sorry for not being more clear, this is a mockup of my current kitchen. I definitely realize there is a lot of improvement to be made. I was thinking of swapping the fridge for the stove so the fridge is in the wider part of the room and is not a limiting factor in the narrower part of the room. I also like the thought of putting the fridge near the dining room and making glasses available nearby so guests can make a drink and talk while I am cooking at the stove or chopping near the sink.
I would love to open the pantry to the kitchen but am having trouble figuring exactly how I would do that with the current configuration. I'll try to assemble something tomorrow but I am having a slight lack of creativity for my own kitchen, haha. I feel like I can't see outside of the current layout, especially when major changes are involved (like opening the pantry to the kitchen).
Hi, Here's something to get you started using your ideas. You really have a lot of space to play with. I don't know what to do about the pantry since it seems sort of recessed so I just put a big pantry cabinet there. They hold a lot so it might be worth losing some of the space since they're only a 30" wide - unless you want to modify something. I think the base near the entry at the bottom would be cut down to be less deep than normal to allow freer passage. The 12" bases opposite the cook top could also be deeper by modifying normal depth ones. Anyway, good luck.
Thanks for the plan, that is actually pretty close to something I was thinking too. I like the cooktop on that end of the kitchen because it allows guests to make drinks/socialize in the other end while not cutting through the active cooking space. And the landing spot next to the fridge is also really nice, that would be really handy to have. The wall oven might also work well with a wall oven/microwave combo so the microwave doesn't have to take up any counter real estate.
NBeth, the pantry is actually only about the size of the high cabinet in the plan above. It is closed off with a door. That area is kind of a passthrough in the middle of the house and connects the kitchen, living room, stairway to basement, and the bathroom. Busy zone!
