Review request: IKEA Kitchen Photo: Baltimore kitchen plan

Image Title: Baltimore kitchen plan
Description: Finally my kitchen remodel plans. This is the original size of the kitchen> I am also considering enlarging it slightly if necessary.

Notes: The blank "wall" to the right of the dining table is not there- this is open to the family room.
Also, I am planning a microhood over the stove, under the fan cabinet.

Please comment:
1. Is the 36 inches between the stove and the island enough?
2. Is the 40 inches between the island and the door behind it (to the basement) enough?
3. Is the 32 inch desk between the 24 inch pantries in the alcove large enough? What upper cabinet would you use here?
4. Please suggest which cabinets may look better with a glass front.

thanks!
Nancy

Re: IKEA Kitchen Photo: Baltimore kitchen plan

Overall, I like the design. I am not sure the distance between the island and wall cabs will be enough though, especially if you have a lot of people in your kitchen. I was originally planning an island but axed it because 3' was the most I could get. Some people may find it to be workable. Place some boxes down where you want your island to be, or tape the floor and live for a week and see how it is.

Above your desk, I would use an over the fridge cabinet that is the same depth as the pantrys with a light installed to shine on the desk. If you needed more desk room you could use 15" pantries and then use (2) 24" fridge cabs which should take up the same space. Don't forget to leave space for cover panels.

I'm not sure how much of a remodel you are doing but instead of the island, you could build a wall out from the end of the cabinet run by the oven and create a nice bar there.

Comments on tag "Desk area?"

Is this planned to be a desk area? I'm not great at planning, but overall it looks good to me! I'm glad to see you finally at the planning stage. And envious!

Re: IKEA Kitchen Photo: Baltimore kitchen plan

Susan- Yes, this the desk area. It took me a while to recover from the whole basement remodel, but nice to be back.

Espo. I like your idea of using a 24 inch upper cabinet with lights underneath over the desk but am a little worried about the ability to access storage in that upper cabinet. How high above the desk would you put that?
Also, I have exactly 88 inches and would not have room for cover panels if I had two 15 inch pantries and two 24 inch fridge cabinets.

I tried the "U" config several times but then the oven would have to be in the peninsula and I didn't want a hood overhead. We have a downdraft oven in that position now and it just doesn't work very well.

thanks and looking forward to more comments..

Re: IKEA Kitchen Photo: Baltimore kitchen plan

I'm thinking the fridge might be better at the end of the run to allow more uninterrupted counter in the main part of the kitchen. That would change the upper cabinets in that corner, maybe some glass could go there.

Re: IKEA Kitchen Photo: Baltimore kitchen plan

bgs, thanks for your suggestion,I agree that having the fridge at the end of the run would greatly improve the upper cabinet configuration. However, it would cause the entrance to the dining room seem really narrow and aisle-like. I will have to further consider it. That corner cabinet and the tiny 12 inch cabinet beside it really bugs me, those 12 inch cabinets are quite useless. I really wish that Ikea had be better upper corner cabinet configuration! Maybe I'll look at getting a custom blind corner cabinet made at Scherr's so I can get a wider cabinet above the dishwasher.

Re: IKEA Kitchen Photo: Baltimore kitchen plan

oh, just had an idea! Since this small island is not attached to water or electricity, could it be put on wheels so that it can be moved slightly if needed? Any ideas as to how they could be attached? Or is this a crazy idea? We have a roomba so cleaning underneath would not be a problem even if we didn't want to move it.

If you want a non permanent island, look at the Varde units, they look really good.

I played with the upper corner cabinets a bit, using a blind corner with a 30 inch cab and a 24 inch cab abutting the window. I think this may give me more useable space than the existing Ikea corner cabinet that I used in the original plan, What do you think?

Also, I like Varde too, but don't think it would go with my planned Shaker white kitchen.
