Question "Snap-In" hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

I am planning a kitchen using IKEA cabinets, IKEA with Scherr's doors, or Scherr's RTA cabinets. I was wondering what peoples experience with "snap-in" hinges, common on IKEA cabinets, is versus the traditional method of attaching to the doors with screws. Do the "snap in" hinges hold the doors as securely? Anyone had any issues with this over time?

Re: "Snap-In" hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

The snap in system used by IKEA is highly durable. The hinges are made by BLUM, the company that makes the hardware for top end European cabinetry by many custom manufacturers. The hinges and the tandembox drawers (also by BLUM) are MAJOR reasons why IKEA kitchen cabinets are such a fantastic solution. Especially when you add in the blumotion dampers on the hinges and drawers.

Seriously, it's the same exact hardware that you would pay a heavy premium for with any other brand. IKEA sells it for a fraction of the cost elsewhere.

Re: "Snap-In" hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

Just realized I might not have actually answered what you were asking. We've had our cabinets for several years now, all the way through the toddler years of our son and daughter, and while they have broken plates and glasses, chipped the soapstone counter, climbed the drawers in the pullout pantry like stairs ::shudder::, not *once* have we had a single problem with any drawer or hinge, they still look/work like brand new. And ever since they came out with the clip on dampers for doors and drawers, you can't slam anything even if you TRY.

It's awesome stuff. In fact it's the reason Susan and I started IKEAFANS!

Re: "Snap-In" hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

My parents just bought a house that has a 20 years old IKEA kitchen ... the Blum hinges are still there and functional.

I've had an IKEA kitchen for 8 years myself and never had a problem with hinges or drawers systems.

What I like with those hinges is that it is very easy to remove the door when you need/want to change it.
