I realize you all love Ikea. How do the cabinets that you have to assemble from Home Depot compare to Ikea? I was comparing prices and it seems that HD is cheaper and I'm wondering how they are comparable in quality.
I have actually had both- I put Mills Pride pre-assembled and unpainted cabs in our first house. Basic but functional. Nothing going on inside. Basic cab sizes, basic hinges, no soft close, none of the truly high-end cabinet components IKEA offers at an incredible price.
One door style at HD (for the cheapies) but unlimited paint choices! Cause you're paint'n 'em!
We did the kitchen with counters for about $1,100. This was many years ago, but it was impressive then, and a huge improvement over what was there.
If you can afford the IKEA, you will not regret it. There really isn't a comparison.
I went tonight to pick up other stuff, and stopped in to the kitchen section. They have 5 instock styles and some in wood, but there is no set up kitchens to see the quality or possible combinations. The one that is similar to the adel white is the second to cheapest and special order. Made by Distinctions.
I'll have to take a trip to Ikea tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
I priced out some HD kitchen options before deciding on Ikea. I had multiple kitchen reps at my HD store say they would NOT let anyone buy the Venue line of cabinets. Too many problems, too cheaply made and HD was pulling the Venue line from stores in the near future.
I just keep coming back to the 25 yr Ikea warranty. You can't beat it! When people look at me like I have 2 heads after I tell them we are getting an Ikea kitchen I simply tell them about the warranty - it seems to shut them up pretty quickly
There really is NO comparison on the quality of the hardware and the available amenities. The drawers and the soft close dampers are both things that you only get as expensive options on upscale lines, you get them for a small fraction of the price at IKEA.
I don't know that there's a big difference in the strength of the basic cab, but I do know that IKEA's out gassing/VOC content is likely to be a lot better, and their general commitment to good manufacturing processes etc is excellent. The quality control on the kitchen cabinets is excellent.
And as a tongue in cheek kinda validation of the quality difference, have you been to MillsPrideFans.com? No? Why not?

My ex-husband was a kitchen designer for Home Depot. Before we had an IKEA in FL, I told him I wanted either IKEA cabinets or the HD Mills Pride cabinets. He said we'll make the 9 hour trip each way to get the IKEA cabinets when the time comes. Nuff said.
LOL
One other thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is the incredible advantage of the modular system Ikea uses. With the cabinets from The-Company-Formerly-Known-As-Mills-Pride, if you want to mod a cabinet, you'll have to buy an entire cabinet if you need a piece of one. Break a door? Buy a new cabinet to get the door.
(And I don't know where you are, but where I am they are not less expensive, either.)
When I went to Home Depot I was told $8000 for a basic standard kitchen with basic doors. When I asked about extras like draw dampers and lazy susans, she looked at me, sucked her cheeks in and said those would add a lot to the price. It could be anything up to $11-12k.
From IKEA I have the same kitchen with ALL the bells and whistles for $5000.
My Dad came with me to buy the kitchen. He couldn't stop opening and closing the draws, was amazed at all the options and styles. His house could carry a much more expensive kitchen but he was sold on IKEA.
He's a bit of a car nut (for those who now his latest project is rebuilding an old MG) and could even tell me which model of Mercedes has doors like the drawers in IKEA.
