I've been lurking the forums for a few days now as I plan a slight upgrade to our small galley kitchen. Currently the old 1920's cabinets (top and bottom) are in great shape and provide much needed space. It's the pea green/yellow 4 inch tiles that need to go.

I'm thinking of ripping out the tile countertops and replacing with the Pronomen countertops. I'll be leaving the tile on the wall, but as it gets no use or abuse, we'll be painting that. The countertop space is a slight "j" shape, so I'll need to have two joints about a foot away from a new sink I'll put in. Has anybody used a miter joint in the corners, or have you just used a butt joint instead?

Any suggestions for the demo of the old tiles without damagine the cabinets? Prybar, chisel and BFH?

Any input is greatly appreciated, and I'm thankful for Lisa and Tim and Joyce's pictures confirming how great this stuff can look.

Hi and welcome! Glad you're here.

You might want to check inside your cabinets, under the countertop. Most are attached that way, and if you unscrew them you can lift them right off. Of course, break the seal at the wall first, and disconnect the sink plumbing.

The tile on the wall would be easiest to remove with a prybar, sledge or if its on drywall, just cut it out, drywall and all.

As for the jointing of the countertop, I will leave that to the Installation Department...aka Tigratrus and Torrus.

With the Pronomen countertops you need to make a butt joint...keep in mind that the wooden tops expand and contract across the depth dimension (25 1/2") so a small gap at the wall is required.

Thanks guys...I appreciate the input. I'm no stranger to most things DIY, but I figured I'd rather be prepared when it comes to installing this stuff.
