First time to this site. We are looking at the Adel white cabinets, spent all day at Ikea Burbank. The following is an observation we made when we came home:
We have a 30" Subzero fridge that is 84" high, what is the best solution for a cabinet above with a 15" x 24" x 88" high pull out pantry next to it? I'm assuming that the pullout will be 4" higher with the legs, is this correct? (sorry newbie). Thanks.
You are correct in thinking that the legs will add to the height of the tall pantry. There are several heights available in legs if you want to go with the stainless Capita legs. The regular Akurum legs are used with toekicks and they are adjustable to about 5 inches.
So your fridge at 84 and the pantry at 92 gives you a gap of only eight inches to fill to match the height of the pantry. Does your fridge need ventilation at the top? If so, using a cover panel to create a top would be the easiest option, and you would need to use some material (lattice, screen?) at the front to provide for ventilation. If you don't need the airflow, a few people have used that area to create wine cubbies (not recommended by wine people), you could use those cool metal wine bottle holders that IKEA sells underneath it, you could rip down a cover panel to create a little door on a horizontal hinge and use the space for oversize platters and such...
If you have higher ceilings, you could use a deep overfridge cabinet and have a stepped look from the top of the pantry to the top of the overfridge cabinet, giving you a cool little spot for a piece of art or pottery on top of the pantry. The deep overfridge cabinet is 24 inches high, so you'd go to 106 inches leaving a space of 14 inches above the pantry.
You could cut down the overfridge cabinet, but I think modifying an Adel door would not work well. You could make a custom door pretty easily with MDF and then paint it. It's not the best solution in my mind, though.
And lastly, you could build out a frame standing 12 inches out from the wall and use a shorter, shallower overfridge cabinet that would be mounted to the frame and be flush with the deeper pantry. It would still be higher than the pantry but not as much as the deep overfridge cabinet, since it is only 15 inches high.
Can you tell us how high your ceiling is? Are you planning to put anything above the 88" high pull out + 4"=92? The shortest wall cabs are 15.25", so that would put you at 99.25," which is a tinch over 8' for reference.
A lot of folks end up with something modified or custom over the refrigerator as its such a clunky area, and fridges vary so much (as mentioned in another thread today).
Have you used the kitchen planner? Its highly recommended by the most experienced people on the site, and it makes it very easy for you to get help here with questions just like this!
Thanks for the prompt reply. Our ceilings are 97" high. I have a photo of the existing fridge setup, but it's too big for me to attach and I'm not a computer genius and don't know how to send it. The Subzero has the condensor/venting above the fridge itself, so in it's current situation, it has a cabinet built directly above it. Are the filler panels easy to adjust and make look reasonable? (My husband is a dentist, not a carpenter). Please advise. Thanks.
totally understand! My thought was that by posting the design from the planner other people would be able to visualize your dilemma and be more able to help.
Liz, the dillema of the built-in fridge is a toughy and, despite looking a lot, I didn't find many with Ikea kitchen solutions;lots of regular fridges made to look builtin but very few real builtin fridges. The extra height of the builtinfridge makes it a little more tricky to find an easy solution as you have less height to play with above it.
Do you really need a cabinet above the fridge? Could you use the shorter pantry cabinet (79 and some inchesplus the toe kick) and do minimal trim to encompass the fridge and pantry cabinet to make it look like one piece? That is the solution we came up with. We have the 24x79(ish) pantry cabinet next to our48" builtin which isjust shy of 84" high. We set the legs on the pantry so that it's exactly the same height as the fridge. The pantry cabinet has a trim panel on either side (made from 3'x8' panels). We then have a 1.5" wide piece of ripped down panelattached to the side of that which the refrigerator sits in front of. We still have to build the trim panel on the other side of the fridge but the plan is to use the same 3'x8' panel with a matching 1.5" wide strip. We'll then finish it off with another panel running along the top of the fridge and pantry cabinet. We may have another strip of trim between the top panel and the fridge to finish it off if necessary.
Anyway, that is our solution. I'll try and post pics in the morning.
Thanks for the info. I don't have to have a cabinet above the fridge, I just want it finished off. I have a photo of what it looks like now, but tried to post and was told it was too large. Any hints?I'm not sure about what you are talking about regarding the finish panels as we don't have the cabinets yet. Look forward to seeing your photos.
What I mean by the end panels is, instead of using Ikeas regular end panels for the cabinet, we used their larger 3'x8' panel (not sure what it's called). We used these throughout the kitchenbecause it allows us to bring the trim forward far enough to sit flush with the door front which, I feel, gives a more modern streamlined look. I also like that the panels are 3/4" thick. So, we have an end panel on either side of the pantry (well actually we ripped them down as only the front is visible in this particular case), then took a piece of panel 1 and 1/2" wide and screwed that into the side of the panel recessed about 1/2" but facing forwards so it looks like a piece of cabinet facia. The fridge trim then sits in front of that. I know it's hard to picture from the description but I hope you get it.
We have taller ceilings than you so we had thought we might put more cabinets above both the pantry and the fridge, but in the end we decided we didn't need to. The benefit of using the smaller pantry cab is that you can have it sit at the same height as the fridge which gives you a bit more freedom to choose options above. With the height that you have though, I think you're going to have to custom build something to make it work if you want something above the fridge as the smallest cab is bigger than the space you have available.
