Hi! I'm new to the site. I've been hanging around THS site for about a year trying to figure out this kitchen remodel thing and I've finally migrated over here. This site is a wonderful resource! This may be a little long but I hope you guys can help.
I am strongly considering using Ikea cabinets and I've already read a lot of information here. I was hoping if I list some of the things I want for my kitchen/cabinets I may get some feedback on whether 1) it may be possible to do or 2) it may be possible but with a creative work around.
1. First of all, I would love it if all of the wall cabinets/tall cabs would go to the ceiling and topped with crown or cove mouldings. I have 8' ceilings. Is this possible? Does anyone have pictures?
2. I was interested in an appliance garage in a corner. I see that there is a corner cabinet but I was at least hoping for one that could go from counter to ceiling. Anyone have experience with this?
3. Want to do two base filing cabinets and understand from an older post that this may be difficult to do. Is this still the case or has a work around been developed from either Ikea or a third party vendor?
4. Wondering if there is any compatibility issues with certain appliances (in terms of fit).
a. I am planning a 30" wall oven with built in microwave above (use of trim kit).
b. Also, would like to do a counter depth (not built in) refrigerator built in snug with cabs around. Is there an issue with counter depth fridges? I just haven't seen any in pictures and thought there might be a problem.
c. Would like to put a cabinet cover on a fully integrated dishwasher. Any good possibilities for this? Has anyone tried Frigo designs with success?
I think that's it. (That's enough!) I am so hoping that Ikea will be the solution for us.
Regarding your question about moulding at the ceiling -
I don't have any pictures, but was just thinking about this after reading your question. The toekick, the recessed part under the base cabinets where they meet the floor, is also sold for use as filler - for where you have a little extra space between a wall and a cabinet, for example. I would think that you could install the wall cabinets such that you could install the filler vertically on top of the cabinets - I'm not this far yet myself, but it seems like it would be easy, line it up, clamp, and screw up from the top of the cabinet frame. Then the filler could act like a ground for your moulding, and you could make the moulding meet the ceiling. Let me sketch it and see if anyone more experienced thinks this would work.
I actually like hers better as it looks lighter and I like that it sets up on the toe kick - ours goes all the way to the floor.
Our fridge is actually a Maytag but we looked at the Kitchen Aid as well. At the time, the Kitchen Aid and the Maytag were the only readily available French Door Counter Depth Fridges available. Maytag was running a promotion and it was cheaper than the Kitchen Aid so that's what we went with.
My experience with Ikea New Haven has been great. Travis, in the kitchen department, is a lot of fun and he's great to work with but I think that some of the other kitchen staff there is better. There names are now completely escaping me but somewhere there's a thread on favorite Ikeans and I think I put their names in there.
Our ceilings are not very high. 7-1/2 to 7-3/4 feet at the most.

Yes, it is possible. You would use filler or a strip of MDF attached at right angles with L brackets, and then attach the molding to that. I think it might be called a library board when you use this technique. The cabinets come in 30 and 39 inch heights, how high are your ceilings?
2. I was interested in an appliance garage in a corner. I see that there is a corner cabinet but I was at least hoping for one that could go from counter to ceiling. Anyone have experience with this?
I have an appliance garage purchased from Kitchen National Products through Kitchensource.com. It comes in both straight and corner styles. The unfinished maple is a perfect match for the birch cabinets, and there are paint matches you can use for white. What doorstyle are you considering?

You can't use Akurum cabinets for files, but there are other options. Depends on your design!
4. Wondering if there is any compatibility issues with certain appliances (in terms of fit).

This should be fine. There's a double oven cabinet you would use for this.
b. Also, would like to do a counter depth (not built in) refrigerator built in snug with cabs around. Is there an issue with counter depth fridges? I just haven't seen any in pictures and thought there might be a problem.
I see Jen answered you here!
c. Would like to put a cabinet cover on a fully integrated dishwasher. Any good possibilities for this? Has anyone tried Frigo designs with success?
It depends on your appliance and the doorstyle you choose. There is no 24 inch wide door that will fit, but you could possibly cut down a cover panel.
Doorstyle: Applaud Blue-Gray, Applaud White, Abstakt Black
I see all your questions were answered by the wonderful professionals on this site. I just thought I'd share our solutions to some of the very same puzzles.
Here's our floor to ceiling cabinets with counter depth fridge...
I am absolutely no help at all other than with the question about counter-depth fridges. We have one.
It's framed by a tall cover panel (88"), a cabinet and then a make-shift pull-out broom closet.
jgsearls,
I love your kitchen and actually getting the same style cabinets. We're new to this Ikea thing and so bare with the questions.
See where you frig is? we have installed the pantry like that but our interior/exterior is birch, which doesn't have the Adel med brown you have on yours. Is this a separate cost? and another piece I need to buy in order to cover the birch color?
