I went to my local ( Canton , MI) Ikea today and placed another kitchen cabinet order for self-pickup (I'm ordering in sections that my 4 year-old son & I can pick up and fit in our minivan :-) I was told that they started a new policy "a week or so ago" that charges a $19.99 fee for each order that has to be shipped from the warehouse to the store for customer pick-up (my cabinets are Linjar so all the fronts/doors are pay-in-advance & pick up at the store orders). I was so annoyed by this I decided to just order the cabinets & etc. (legs, shelves, drawers) that are in stock normally and save the rest for my last (5th section) order of cabinets. The kitchen guy said that the $19.99 was to cover gas to transport the pieces (to the store). I wasn't happy about the idea (and the amount) because *I* am doing the loading, unloading & delivery, and they are sending supply trucks to the store anyway.

Has anyone else heard of this policy? Am I the only one who thinks it's excessive? (It seems to be a flat, per order rate.)

Here in MA they will charge you a $15 'holding' fee or some such for special order items that you have to pick up at the IKEA warehouse! Mind you, I always get thei waived by making a stink about it... but it seems an unfair way to get a few extra bucks out of people.

My advice - offer to pick it up at the warehouse then! Usually I've found that if you make a little stink about it, they waive the fee.

Hey Dave - where is the closest IKEA warehouse to the store in Stoughton ? I'll be ordering my kitchen on November 1 and wasn't aware of the holding fee.

Literally right down the road - maybe 1 - 2 miles away? Its in Stoughton & opens at 9AM - you can order, wait 2 weeks, go pick up & then go to IKEA to get anything that was missed quite efficiently.

Durham, huh? I went to UNH & lived in Dover for a few years... loved that area!

Thanks, Dave ... good to know!

Yes, Durham ... my husband and I both work at UNH and live close enough to campus to walk - we're in the neighborhood parallel to Durham Marketplace.

Shar, I was at the Canton store yesterday and was told to pick up special orders at the warehouse in Romulus. I don't even know where Romulus is, but was told it is a 10 minute drive south of the store.

jenmarie:

Mind if I ask what you do at UNH? My wife and I had a chuckle thinking about where you live.. I roomed in Hetzel & she stayed in the upper quad for our first year there. There's a big white frat house across from the end of your road, right?

I've been to a lot of school campuses since, and UNH still has hands down one of the best 'walking' campuses around... very hard to beat!

I always loved it in the fall...
