I'm trying to put together a color scheme for my kitchen. we're using the nexus black-brown cabinets, and the silver-birch corian countertop.

the main areas of our house are painted mostly ralph lauren oatmeal, with a few accent walls in ralph lauren broom, trim in chocolate, and curtains in a burnt orange. we also have light natural stained oak flooring throughout.

i'm a little worried that the oatmeal in the kitchen will be too dark with the new cabinets. should i go with a lighter color? if so, any suggestions based on the color scheme in the rest of the house?
also, i'm going to do a back-painted glass back splash and would love some help choosing that color as well. i had thought of going with a green of some sort, but now wonder if i should stick with something in the oranges in order to stay in our current color palette. thoughts or suggestions?
Have you ever seen the show Color Confidential? We need one of her cool colour wheels full of nifty stuff.
I'm not so sure about the green, now I see the other colours. It really depends on how open plan the layout is. If it is a different room, then go green!
Yellows, golds and oranges would blend right in with your colour scheme. But you could go from the other side of the colour wheel and go with a blue shade. That would really stand out and be a dramatic contrast.
I think a nice shade of cantelope orange or sherbert orange glass with the Nexus BB would be amazing.
Have I told you about the amazing sinks I saw yesterday? I posted them in this thread A preview of Abstrakt gray at the bottom of the page. Check them out!! They are fab!
I was going to do the black brown cabinets with a light counter, and a very pale mint green on the walls... I felt the contrast would be spectacular.. I don't think each room has to match the next unless walls are open into each one.
I vetoed the dark cabinets, however... realistically my kitchen is too small and not modern enough to pull it off.. I'm going with the white STAT cabinets, a light cork floor, a barely polar blue for the walls and a carrera marble for the counters... I can't wait!

Thanks Zeuss,
Those sinks are great! Our kitchen is pretty open to the den, which is painted oatmeal with chocolate trim. But doesn't have any of the orange. The orange is actually in the front portion of the house. Do you think we could still pull off a green back splash?
What do you think of oatmeal in the kitchen? I feel like it is too dark (and maybe too warm?) in that relatively small space with the Nexus BB cabinets. The kitchen is not enormous (about 21X13). So many of the pictures of kitchens we like have the white-ish countertops with very, very light beige or off-white walls.
Orange and green were made for one another!! I think that would really work- esp as you have the cabinets taking up most of the visual space. Kitchens can really handle color.
What color should the stain be for red oak hardwood floors? I like light floors with Nexus BB but don't want the yellow hue that appears in some light stains.
Also, I love the Silver Birch corian, but it is really expensive. What do you think of Technistone Crystal Quartz White or Starlight White? (Technistone® Available Colors).
I like both those colours of Technistone, but the Starlight White is my favourite. But won't that be more expensive than Corian? Quartz is usually a lot more than solid surface. But then the black solid surface I wanted turned out to be as much as quartz - I nearly freaked!!! So I completely sidesteped and went granite. I just don't understand the pricing of these products. Some companies have Level A, Level B etc prices - so the fancier or darker, the more expensive. Other companies don't have tiered pricing. So it is very difficult to shop around.
One thing you could do is pick a fabricator who does it all. We have one here in Vancouver that does almost every solid surface of quartz company out there. Then you could get a straight answer about how to go.
