I'm making a peninsula out of base cabinets, but I'm under of what to put on the back that will be visible? Can I put matching door fronts for a finished look, or is there another product that's made specifically for this?
as always... thanks! We're going to try picking up our kitchen this weekend! (think it will all fit in one pickup truck? it's 18 cabinets, plus 4 tall shallow pantry ones)
There is a product specifically for this. You order a big panel - it isn't in the Planner. It is different that the big pantry panel. Those are only 24x88 and 1/2" thick.
The big panel (I don't know its real name) is 36x96 and is a full 3/4" thick. They usually cost around $100 in
Canada
(don't know US)
We used them in 2 ways in my sister's kitchen. The back of her island is Abstrakt Red.
Re: visible cabinet backs
And we used one on either side of the fridge to 'pull' out the fridge and not have the giant fridge stick out so much. See how much further the white panel sticks out from the counter width...
Re: visible cabinet backs
compared to the regular white panels on the sides of these pantries

No isn't adequate. We knew that going in. It turned out her and her hubby measured the room wrong so the planning was all done for that island with the proper clearances. Then when we realized the mistake, she couldn't bear to cut it. So we scaled it down and hoped for the best.
It is for her kids to sit at so it works out ok. But you really really need 12" minimum.
Just to throw more confusion in there, you also have the option of covering it up with other material that might fit your overall theme. I've seen people use their backsplash tile, painted drywall, beadboard, etc. Drywall is a bit iffy, because you definitely can get scuff marks from people's shoes!
backsplash tile!!!!! See.. I LOVE this forum.. I get all kinds of ideas! Or beadboard works just as well (and cheaper!). I could paint it the color of the ceiling which is BM called Summer Storm... it's gorgeous... so soft...
and, back to your original thought, others have used doors in order to have a special finished look.
one thing to keep in mind about the 3x8s is that the graining only goes in one direction, meaning if you have a horizontal graining it's going to be vertical on that panel (this isn't necessarily an answer to the
op
, but more for posterity)
