Applying veneer to IKEA cabinets?
Just curious if anyone here has ever tried to apply veneer to the outside of the IKEA cabs.
I know others have used edge-banding with success, but I'd like to know if it would work to apply a large sheet of veneer to the side of a cab. I have a spot that will be exposed but there's no room for a cover panel, so I was considering veneer.
I'd love to hear what others think or see photos if anyone has used veneer.
I looked into doing custom veneer of exotic wood, and I think there's a bit to it- maybe I was on the perfectionist site, but I recall something about vacuuming sealing it!
How big/what shape? Not that you don't know, but you really can't put a trimmed cover panel on it?
This is an interesting question. My thinking is that it may depend on where the veneer was being placed and how strong the adhesive was. If it were in a location that wasn't affected by excessive heat then it may not be a problem again assuming the adhesive was adequately strong.
vacuum sealing is for a good way to get a perfectly smooth, perfectly even bond between the veneer and the surface beneath it, but if it worked otherwise I don't see why you couldn't do it the old fashioned way with a roller, although it would be a lot more work.

I have, but not with wood. Due to a couple of mistakes, I had that same issue in one spot in my kitchen. I used aluminium roll flashing to cover the side of one of my carcasses that's part of a sideboard. I adhered it with contact cement just like you would laminate or wood veneer. Very easy but it does require a bit of patience. That I was using metal made it more difficult and it telegraphs and reflects even the tiniest of imperfections. I imagine wood would be a bit more forgiving because it's easier to trim and not reflective.
I used to LOVE watching New Yankee Workshop when I was a kid, and I remember seeing Norm put wood veneer on stuff several times. You could probably find some video to watch someplace if that would make you less afraid to try it, and at least then you'd know the "right' way.

I once used 1/4" luaun plywood as a cover panel between a wall and high cabinet where a regular IKEA panel would not fit. The space was so tight that I had to "notch" the plywood, so that it went around the wall cabinet, rather than between the 2 cabinets. I had to adjust the door so that it didn't rub against the plywood, but it all worked fine in the end.
