Can everyone help me choose a plan (any suggestions are appreciated!). There are two 3d plans to choose from, and I also have the option of removing the breezeway and breakfast table. This would make the island twice as long and allow for pantry cabinets instead of the table.
I really like the "U" shaped kitchen- said to be the most functional of kitchen designs. The kitchen table is up to you- I say the more storage the better. It would be a good problem to have- more storage than you need!
I vote for the island because you will be able to do all of this:
1. unload/load fridge from island
2. move around easily and more importantly, you can get to the dining table easily. I think the U shape blocks you from getting to the table quickly. I find that I am always hopping up and down from the table to get something for someone.
3. you'll be able to pivot and place those home baked cookies on your island.
Also, my MIL has the same layout and that center island is a huge help.
Oh, and I love mid-century too!

Reason: to add:
I would prefer the island plan. Someone can be at the sink loading dishes while someone else is at the stove. I currently have my dishwasher between my sink and stove and it is not ideal.
I like U-Shaped plans, but yours would divide the work area completely from the dining area and you may get tired of going around the "U' to get to the table. If the "U" opened-up to the dining area, it would be fine.
Something else to consider would be to have a range (or cooktop with wall oven underneath) instead of a separate cooktop and wall oven elsewhere. Then you could have a 15" or 24" pullout pantry where the wall oven is now and a larger drawer base next to it with a microwave above. Also consider having cabinet storage for your glassware close to the frig./pantry area so no one has to come into your work zone to get a glass.
Edited to add: Also make sure you have enough clearance between your perimeter cabinetry and your island. 48" would be good; if not more.
another vote for the plan with the island... I really like islands ...
