Kitchen Remodel - Almost Done!!

Hi All,
First post here, been lurking for a while gathering info to get started on our kitchen project.
Quick background story: We (my gf Melissa and I) moved into our Seattle condo about 3 months ago. The place is great, however shortly after moving in we decided the Big Blue Kitchen just didn't jive with our taste nor with the space.

The blue was a little overwhelming, so were all the walls by the way but that was taken care of and toned down with a couple of coats of nice mellow colors. All the black granite made the kitchen appear very dark and cave-like and, in combination with the higher bar, cooking and working in the kitchen became somewhat of a lonely, depressing experience
So we ventured out on the net looking for inspiration and drew up some ideas and off to Ikea we went (a little earlier than planned to take advantage of the 20% off special with the appliances!!).

Demolition started 2 weeks ago and took only 2 days, taking off the granite was really the hardest part.

The metal frame seen in this pic was the reason they had the higher bar I guess, there was some plumbing and electrical to remove/rearrange so we can have everything counter-height.

Storage space for all the new cabinets and some old ones was a bit of an issue:

Melissa became very adapt at putting together new cabinets

And the new cabinets were in place after the first weekend (well, almost all anyway..).

Progress slowed a bit since as I had to go back to work so it was mostly nights and a bit last weekend and this is where we stand at the moment:
Cabinets and countertops in place:

Sink cut-out nicely done and island (peninsula, really) looking good (the gap in the middle where the bar used to be contains the wall with plumbing and electric, this will be covered by custom cut brushed stainless):

Pantry is great, all this storage!!

New induction cooktop (showroom pic), installed and works awesome!! The price in the pic is not what I paid and not even what they retail for, my whole budget is close to $10k so I had to get it considerably cheaper

One question for all you experts: The high (80") oven cabinet has provisions for a top cabinet for which we will use a 24"x15" door. Of course, the door comes with the hinge provisions on the long side whereas we would really need it to be on the shorter side.. Has anyone ever installed these to be top-opening like the newer wall cabinets they have at Ikea? We tried getting the hinges for those but they are not sold separately, so I may give it a go with regular hinges and install a scissor arm on the side to keep it open? Suggestions welcome!!
Other than that, all went pretty smooth and we are thrilled with the results so far. The back wall will carry some Grundtal racks and rails to keep with the modern steel/glass/concrete design (concrete floors).
Will post more pics as we come closer to completion (I have a full work-day scheduled for Thanksgiving tomorrow ).
Stay tuned

Looking good!

Buying a whole horizontal cabinet just for the hinges is worth it - they're much more expensive if you try to source them separately from Blum.

Looks like a fabulous transformation! Just one question: how are you sealing the wood by the sink? I don't see the tell tale shine of Waterlox...?

Thanks!! Yes, sealing the counter around the sink is on the to-do list.. Would have rather done that before the sink went in, but we were a bit strapped for time The faucet only went in today so it hasn't seen much use so far, will probably throw the first coat on tomorrow.
From what I read, the Ikea Behandla treatment is not too popular around here. Has anyone used the butcher block conditioner (from Howard, got it at Home Depot)? It's pretty much a food-grade mineral oil combined with Beeswax, I was thinking of giving that a try but seeing the cost of the sink cut-out I wouldn't want to take any risks!!

Re: Kitchen Remodel - Almost Done!!

Quick update with some pics, happy with today's progress!! Long day, got all the handles on (Vinna), fine-tuned some of the drawer alignments, some minor plumbing and lots of sanding and sealing countertops (these pics don't show their new shine as I took them beforehand). Got all the Grundtal racks and rails up too, they are great and so functional, major improvement over my old (pretty much useless upper cabinets) and a lot prettier!!
Unfortunately, the electrician hasn't been able to make it here to hook up the oven, so no turkey here We rest knowing next year's Thanksgiving will make up for it!!!
Here ya go:

Wow, it looks great. Have you used the ovens yet? How are they?

Thanks!! I haven't used the oven as it is not connected yet. We need to run a separate 220V circuit for it and the electrician hasn't been able to do so yet.. The microwave, the top one in the cabinet, works great and I really like this set-up!!

Re: Kitchen Remodel - Almost Done!!

Not really an update, needed a rest tonight lol .. Someone asked me though how I managed to squeeze in the stainless steel strip between the countertops of the two parts of the island. It really is quite simple, provided you have the tools and a steady hand (which I do not, that's why I had a carpenter help me out for 2 days..).
Start off with cutting the countertops at length. Then, you'll need a router with a bit that takes off just the top part of the material. They're usually adjustable, in my case we only took off about 1/16".
Then you'll need a long level or other piece to work as a "guide" for the router and adjust it with clamps so it sits in the right place and you won't overshoot your line.
Then you can start routing and, if all goes well, you'll end up with a nice straight line:

In our kitchen, things are a little more complicated due to our decision to have the countertops continue on to the floor but it's the same principle. Once all that is done (or preferably before you start, actually), you can order your custom cut stainless pieces. I used onlinemetals.com and, while their turnaround time and prices are pretty good, they did cut one piece too long so I had to trim off about 1/8" myself..
After that, it's pretty straighforward if all your measurements are correct. Get some glue or LiquidNails and just glue the pieces of stainless in their respective grooves. On the vertical part, I used a piece of wood and the fridge to keep it in place:

I wedged a screwdriver in on the other side where it seemed a little off to make sure the stainless and the counter glued together nicely:

Make sure you grab a beer before you wedge that 2x4 between the fridge and the counter, handy while you wait!!

When all is said and done, it should look something like this:

It's a great (and inexpensive) way to cover up a wall that can't be removed due to plumbing/electrical and fits in great with the overall theme of our kitchen!!
