The more I think about it, the less enthused I am to slap one of these up. My fridge is 36 wide, 69 high and 36 deep. I cannot even reach a cabinet up there, unless it is also 36 deep and even then, the cab would still be almost useless to me because it is so high. I mean, is it just me or is that cab the kitchen graveyard?
So what are some nice, organizational alternatives? I looked through the kitchen catalog to get some ideas and the only thing I saw was baskets, which would be more functional for me than a cabinet. At this point, the only reason I would be installing a fridge cab is because I've never had a kitchen without one. But I'd rather put something up there that is functional to me. Am I rambling?
my fridge isn't as tall or deep so i put up a 24in deep cabinet and use it for cookie sheets. i love it.
though i must admit with such a large fridge i might rethink the whole love affair too! what about a simple bridging shelf to put vases or something simply decorative? are the surrounding cabinets built out to the 36in mark or the standard 24in with the fridge jutting out?
no problem! someday i hope to have room for lots of decorative niches and shelves, right now i scrimp for every ounce of storage! hopefully you'll post pics and we can all see the mammoth fridge and what you wind up doing with it
I love my deep overfridge cabinet. I have no shelves in it, it's just a big cavernous space. I use it to store all my party stuff...bulk paper plates, cups, large lemonade jars and beverage dispensers, chafing dishes etc. Since I generally use all these things at the same time, it's easy to get the stepstool and get everything I want at once. Then I can put it all away at one time when the party's over, and it's nicely out of site and stored away (and not taking up garage space, either!)
I haven't put the shelves in yet, but it houses all the stuff that the top of the fridge did before. No way around it, only so many places for everything.
I don't know what shelves are available yet, but I only planned on using shelves that went halfway deep, so there wouldn't be any spaces where things simply "dissapear". Perhaps a plexiglass shelf, I do have some extra thick pieces leftover from a project.
Still cleaning up from a party we had tonight. Whew.
I bought some of the shelves for the 36" base cabinet and put them in my over fridge cabinet. Mine is the short one (15" tall), so I could only fit two shelves in there, but it definitely helped. I store all my party platters in there. They're too big to go on their sides, but I hate stacking them more than 2 high, so the shelves work great. I don't mind having it not-so-accessible because I don't need them too often.
Someday we're going to have this above our fridge... we have everything except the actual wine glass racks in place at this point
We have our handle placed at the bottom of the door so it's easily reached as well....
