Saltillo tile floor - what door styles would look good?
I've been browsing this site and working on my design for about a month, and I think I'm finally ready to solicit advice from the experts! My husband is in the Army and we just moved to El Paso, Texas. The house we bought is "territorial" style, which is square and stucco, sort of rustic southwest. The entire bottom story, including the kitchen, is beautiful saltillo tile.
Existing cabinetry is practically rotting, and appliances from the 80's, so we're ripping out and starting from scratch. Since we'll only be here 2-3 years, max, we need to design with an eye to resale. I would normally go for something modern/contemporary, like Hallarum, but in this house I think we need something more universally appealing and in keeping with the house...but that says to potential buyers "Look at me, I've been richly remodeled!"
I think I've almost settled on a design, which I'll attach here in both Adel Med Brown and in Tidaholm oak. I'm worried that the Med Brown will be too orangy/dark against the saltillo. But I don't LOVE the oak...I'm worried it looks to boring or too much like the standard boxes that builders put into new tract homes. Of course, I haven't seen all that many "After" pictures of Tidaholm or Ulriksdal, so maybe I'm just lacking vision there. I feel like wood is a better option than white in this kitchen, because it seems richer and more freshly remodeled than white laminate/foil.
I will attach a few pictures -- my design in the Med Brown and the Tidaholm, and a few shots of the current kitchen so you can see the red/orange saltillo.
Any suggestions on the design itself and ideas about cabinet color (and countertop/wall color) would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Depending on whether the tiles run red or more amber, I'd consider the Lillestad (with amber tiles; dark brown stain) or the Fagerland (with red tiles, antique pine). But take that advice with a grain of salt - I just got rid of oak cabinets, and am not generally inclined to go oak. The Ulriksdal is kind of neat and interesting, but the insets have very sharp angles so they don't jump out at me as going with a Sante Fe/adobe kind of style.
This sounds like a fun project! Welcome to the forums
I would agree with Kathy - the first thought I had was Liljestad, but again...it would depend alot on the undertones of the tile. Fagerland is also a good suggestion - might rub ALOT the wrong way if you prefer modern, but I think it would suit your house style well, if I'm picturing it right.
We have Saltillo with reddish undertones. We are also doing Talavera backsplash.
We think the colors worked very well together for our modern-hacienda.
I also agree - and was thinking Adel Birch would be really nice with the floors. I really like Adel Birch ... That's what's installed in my kitchen....
I was thinking either Adel Birch or Nexus Birch would be nice ...
I think either would work in a southwest style...

Can I chime in as someone who is currently residing in the Southwest?
Fagerland will definitely fit in with the Mexican Rustic Southwestern look. Ramdala (which I think is going bye vye) would work well too. You could even distress it nicely. Lillestad would be a nice choice in the darker tones. In the lighter wood tones, I think Nexus Birch would be the best but you'd need some really good handles and pulls to tie in the theme.
I'm sure I'll have lots more questions as we closer to the ordering stage. Our closest IKEA is 6 hours away in
Tempe
, AZ, so we'll probably have to order over phone/fax and then we'll drive to Tempe to pick it all up in a Uhaul.
Thanks again, I'll let you know what we decide on!
