Ikea Pantry Cabinet Question.

I'm not positive if this is the right area to ask this question, so please feel free to move the post to which ever forum it is best suited.

I'm still in the thinking of using Ikea cabinets stage. I know my husband would prefer to use them, because otherwise he's stuck building us custom. * LOL * I'd also like to use the cabinets, but I need to come up with some ideas on how to work around pieces I really want or we already have and most of these pieces are not Ikea cabinet friendly it seems. We are not close to an Ikea at all, so go to investigate with a tape measure and then brain storming isn't an option sadly.

Right now the obstical I'm trying to tackle is putting two of the 15" pull out pantries on either side of the frigidaire twins, which will work fine, but how do I tie it all in at the top since the over the fridge cabinets will not work. The specs for the twins with the trim pieces are 66" wide by 75" tall. Can make my own header peice or shelf up there and 'tack' them to the pantries ?

I'm up for modifications and painting if need be. I was hoping that someone who has actually had hands on experiance with the pantry cabinets could point me in the right direction though, since I'm kind of flying blind here.

Hi ZipDee and welcome!

Yes, you certainly could put shelving up there, or you could use a 30 and a 36" cabinet together for the full 66" or you could use two 30s and use 3" of filler on either side. The wall cabinets hang on their own suspension rail so they don't have to be right next to the pantry for support.

Check out the Finished Kitchens over on the Fansite side http://www.ikeafans.com/ and you'll find some fantastic ideas and mods that you can do with IKEA!

Hi Eva,

Thanks for the welcome, I think we might know each other from another place. Are you the Eva from MC, well the MC family board before it blew up ?

I'm a total IKEA newbie , so please stick with me while I stumble along in this. If I used the 15x88x24 pull out pantries, that leaves me 13" above the fridge, so the over the fridge cabinets would jut up a couple inches higher than the sides of the pantry right ? Do the legs adjust that much that I could make up a couple inch difference or could I elevate the pantries to make it work ?

I've been reading, reading, reading and checking out everyones mods and pretty kitchens. I think not having an IKEA close where I can actually go look at stuff up close to see what everyone is talking about is throwing me a bit though.

The 88" pantries with standard legs come to 92". You can get taller CAPITA legs (6 and 8 inches, I think) if you want to make the pantry taller, or you could build a platform from wood and set it on there. How tall are your fridges, and what kind of clearance do you need above them for breathing room? You can hang the wall cabinets anywhere you want to, since they are installed on a suspension rail that goes on the wall at any height.

The AKURUM legs adjust about an inch or so.

Have you used the planner? If so, I can take a look at your plans. Either upload the .fpf file or you can post your username/pw for your IKEA space or you can save it to my IKEA space at eva62@yahoo.com password ikea2006

Good to "see" you! What was your MC username?

* LOL * Yes, we know each other then .. It's good to see you too Eva . It's Heather (was Sammy at MC). No my kitchen still isn't done .. but the upstairs is looking pretty spiffy. We decided to get the upstairs done, so we could knock through a wall down stairs and expand the kitchen. Dave works so much though that getting anything completed around here is about impossible .

Anyhow .. nope I haven't messed with the planner too much, it gives me fits. I've worked it all out on paper, but I'm trying to figure out the pantries yet and a few other things. The fridge/freezer is 75" high with the trim pieces on and 66" wide. As far as breathing space, I'm still trying to find specs on their site, we haven't bought them yet. It's giving 75" h x 66" w x 25 1/4 deep .. now since it has a large trim around it, I'm sure that sets up a more than ample breathing space. Here's the set : Frigiaire Side by Side All Refrigerator / All Freezer Pair "Twins" - Features

My kitchen is full of oddities, I'm working around. I've collected a huge vintage 50's coke cooler/soda bar that we are trying to work in and adapt to an island, a 1949 40" wide Tappen stove that's been restored and I have two kitchen sinks that I'm trying to decide between. One is a 33" soapstone farm sink, the other is a 36" Belfast sink that I picked up at an antique shop. For my 'sink cabinet', I'm going to have to come up with my own cabinet outside of ikea I believe and paint it to match or maybe do a fabric skirt under my sink.

No way! IIRC , you were at one time planning copper countertops? And you have that lovely Southern style manse with the big porch? And two daughters with a fantastic fantasy room?

I can probably get the planner to work for you, but it isn't too good at repositioning wall cabinets over fridges. It thinks they should be in a particular spot and if the fridge is too tall that's just too bad LOL

How high are your ceilings? If you have the vertical clearance you could do a short pantry with a cabinet above it and then use the taller overfridge cabs.

Yes, at one time copper contertops .. that and everything else it seems. *LOL* We are actually going to break into the room that the girls are in right now to expand the kitchen. The kitchen is not big enough for our family, so by breaking into the next room it will provide more space and lighten up a dark area too. The girls are going upstairs, we removed all the walls upstairs, put in headers, skylights and opened the space up into one large loft like area. They'll have one large open bedroom, with a sitting/TV room and a bath up there to share. That will let us reclaim the downstairs a bit. *LOL*

Our ceiling are 10 feet in the kitchen area, so we have plenty of room to go up. I was actually thinking that maybe I could use the shorter pantry, I think it's 15x80 and we could use it as a starting point to build an armoire look around the fridge. The cabinets will be white, I may actually try to paint some of the IKEA cabinets to get a closer match to the white of our stove, the Adel white are too cream from what I can see and I want kind of a "Shaker" look, So if I paint the cabinets, I'm thinking any add ons to the pantries can just be painted to match. Do you think that will work, or are you going to be able to pick out the cabinets from the add ons ?

What I'd like is a vintage - retro - cottage ... eclectic mix when I'm done.

Painting IKEA cabinets isn't an easy thing. People have done it, but not on all the doorstyles. The one that works the best seems to be Fagerland, a knotty pine that is solid wood and takes paint well. The thermofoil, not good. There is a list of known paint matches for some of the finishes if you were to get aftermarket doors or cabinets and want to match. Some people have done custom doors on IKEA frames to take advantage of the fabulous engineering but get the look they want. Have you looked at Stat or Lidingo or maybe the Adel Med Brown? And check out the double Domsjo sink...I guarantee you will fall in love.

Have you been to the Fansite side? It's at IKEA Fans Website Home Page There's a lot of info and photos and other helpful things there.

Yep, I've been reading the Fansite too and trying to take in all that info. I've thought about just ordering the cabinets and then Dave could build new Shaker faces for them if need be. He's so busy though with work that everything goes at a snails pace, which is why he'd rather opt out building the cabinets at all if possible. Once the kitchen is started this time, we'd both like to get it wrapped up as soon as possible, since we've been living with a temp. kitchen for so long. If I tried to paint, I'd pick one of the cabinets that was soild wood and veneer most likely, not one of the thermofoil doors. I think if I stuck with something heavy duty like cabinet coat paint, it should adhear alright. If not then plan B would be Dave would *HAVE* to build new faces.

Thanks for all the help Eva, I really appreciate it !

welcome to the site zip!

can i whisper quietly that i hated my 15in pullout? if your fridge sticks out beyond the cabinets at all you only have real access from one side. that said, IKEA has created a beautiful alternative with 153degree hinges. you can have a pantry full of pullout interior drawers. i spent the extra $ to replace the pantry door and i'm still really happy i did it. Just thought i would whisper that in your ear since not everyone knows about the hinges (they were just issued this summer)....

happy tko !
