Finished Kitchen: 1840 Farmhouse Kitchen, Lidingo and Tidaholm
Hi all!
This is our recent kitchen renovation, in our 1840 farmhouse. We've encountered a lot of disbelief that we'd chose IKEA in that setting, but we think good design is timeless, and the doorstyles lend themselves to a variety of settings. Plus the price cannot be beat-- we brought the entire renovation in for under $20K.
We used Lidingo cabinets on the perimeter, and Tidaholm Brown/Black for the island.
The counters are IKEA beech, stained black (with india ink) for the perimeter, and left natural for the island.
We installed the Praktfull Pro A50 range, and the Datid 30" wall oven in the island. The prep sink is the single Domsjo (we did a bit of a hack to undermount it as opposed to surface mount), and both faucets are the Hjuvik.
The pendants are the Ottava, and the puck lights in the cabinets are Grundtal.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

I'm blown away. Not only have you created a beautiful and appropriate kitchen for your 1840 farmhouse, you had the courage to ignore the naysayers and perform this miracle with Ikea cabinets.
It's beyond impressive; it's magazine-worthy. All the great planning, vision, hard work and what am I particularly fascinated with? The India-ink stained counters. How very clever.

That is absolutely GORGEOUS! Thank you for posting!
We'd love to hear more about your inspirations, the project itself and see more pictures! I'd also like to feature this on the home page, AND I think you should definitely enter it into the 'What's Your Story?' contest! $100 IKEA Gift Card can't hurt...
With all the excitement of the possibility of undermounting my own Domsjo I totally forgot to congratulate you on the inspired design and wonderfull execution of your outstanding kitchen. Congratulations!!

Hey all,
Thanks so much for the compliments on the kitchen! We love it, and it's neat to hear that others do, too.
Just to answer some of the questions you all have asked:
Personalshoppper, I wish I could take credit for the idea of staining the counters with India Ink, but I have to give credit to the Woodworkers forum on ThatHomeSite.com. Apparently it's a pretty common alternative to market stains when you really want a true black. From my experience, it went on easy with no streaks, dried within a few hours, and finished out with several coats of Waterlox without an issue. I would highly recommend it!
Karen51, there's been a lot of interest in how we undermounted the Domsjo sink-- I'm a little surprised, because it is EASY to do, and I'd have thought it' was a common hack! Since it turns out it isn't, and there's not a lot of information on the net about it, I started a thread on GardenWeb, which Petra66 was nice enough to link for me. Click on that link, and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reply here or on GardenWeb, and I'll try to help as best I can!
Susan, thanks so much for the compliment! We live in a very cool old house, and this has been a long term project for us, so I will definitely post more background and details on it, and link to an album with more photos.
Of course you're welcome to post our kitchen on this Site's home page, and we'll definitely enter in the "What's Your Story?" contest. We're long-term IKEA fans (25+ years or more) and our house has a ton of IKEA elements in it. A $100 gift certificate would be well-used, should we win it!
Petra66, thanks for your compliments-- if you have any questions as you do your sink install, please don't hesitate to ask. The Domsjo's really easy to undermount, and I think you'll be happy with the result.
Re: Finished Kitchen: 1840 Farmhouse Kitchen, Lidingo and Tidaholm
Can I ask how MUCH india ink you used for the amount of countertop you did? We have a much smaller room, but I've been struggling with how to deal with the transition from soapstone to the wood. Black stained wood seems the perfect option. We have a large butcherblock to inset into the counter to actually cut on since we do plan to Waterlox as well.
So - quart size? Or just a little bottle? thanks in advance!
