Edge Banding with Adel MB

I had just about decided on Adel MB...have been to the store MANY times and loved that door style every time. Then, on my last visit, for the 1st time, I noticed the beech innards showing between the doors. Yuck! I've now gone back to this website, and read several posts talking about this. From the posts, it seems like the beech colour always shows through and that many people modify the edgeband, by painted, staining or replacing.

This seems like a lot of work to me, and might be enough to make me change my mind about Adel MB. Can some of you please comment on the work involved...maybe it's not as big an issue as I seem to think it is.

Thanks!

Hi Denise,
Welcome to the site!

I have Adel MB in my bathroom and refused to go the route of edge banding after looking at some of the threads on it; I know i don't have it in me However, you can adjust your doors so that they close tight and don't show the inner shelves. I have Nexus BB in my media area (even darker than Adel MB) and I can't see the shelves... it is possible to get a tight closure.

I'm sure many others will weigh in with their experiences, but this was mine

I recall reading about the corner wall cabinet being the place where it's hardest to adjust doors to hide the gap.

Kathy, that is a good point, and very true. Thank goodness I've got Stat White in my kitchen! but i also have my corner cabinet recessed into the wall a half inch which i chalk up to most of the issues i have!

We did stained edgebanding with our Adel MB. It was definitely more complicated than I anticipated, but I am glad that I did it. I know myself and I would have been bugged by the lighter colored slivers showing through.

We removed the white melamine with an iron, then ironed on unfinished birch. We then trimmed and stained. I think if you wanted to do edgebanding but wanted to save as much time as possible, see if you can find some prefinished pvc, if you don't mind it not being wood, and just put it right on top of the melamine edge that comes on the boxes. I would guess that pvc would be easier to trim than wood.

If you have any other questions about our process, let me know.

I'm going to add edge banding to my Adel MB cabinets. I'm not at the point where I'm hanging cabinets yet, but I will probably make 1 or 2 to see how they turn out. I am using a polyester wood grained edge band so I avoid the staining process. I'll let you know how it goes!

I have Adel MB doors and birch boxes, and thought I'd be doing the edgebanding substitution, but have been surprised to find that I just don't notice the box color showing through. I might do something about it at some point, but it's way, way down on my priority list.

(There was a thread where somebody talked about using an extra-durable type of shelf paper over the insides of cabinets, and the speculation that this might be an easier way of dealing with the exposed edges. It was noted that this might get tatty, but I would try it before going to the trouble of re-edgebanding, myself.)
