So, I finally had time to fiddle with the planner software, and I was totally frustrated by all the things that aren't on there... how the heck am I to get an accurate layout and order sheet if not everything I want is available on the software? (For instance, the end shelf units, the 12-inch base pull-out pantry...)

Am I better off with a piece of graph paper and a pencil, and then a spreadsheet list of the pieces?

Another thing that was frustrating was trying to account for filler pieces... it seemed nearly impossible to get them in on the software, and obviously you can't account for "creative" fillers on there... and once I started adding them in, all of a sudden it wouldn't let me put my dishwasher in, for no reason that I was able to determine! There was plenty of room (really, not just in my mind)!

I know there was something else, but I can't think of it right now... :X

oh, I know -- it was the appliances! they don't seem to have a microwave/hood combo unit that I could tell... again, making it somewhat difficult to get an accurate plan!

Okay, I ran into all the things that you said, and here's what I did. First, on the planner, I made my kitchen a couple inches bigger than it already was. This allowed me to fix the problems like not allowing placing the dishwasher. As far as filler went, I have white cabinets, so where the end pieces fit, I'm using them, where they don't, I'll leave it blank, so this wasn't a huge deal for me.

For things like end shelves and the OTR mico cabinet that are not in the software, I put in place holders and told the IKEAN when I got there what I wanted. Now, I must tell you that I am definitely not as detail oriented as most folks here. I tend to use a strategy of guessing pretty well and then figuring out later what didn't come out perfectly. I am not a big planner, but I'm pretty good with improvising, trim pieces to cover up imperfections, etc.

I used the planner to basically lay out my kitchen, wrote down the things I couldn't make it do, brought it to the store, and told them my issues. He made it work for me, and my order had no issues.

Hope that helps some. I know you've got to go through Boston to get to the store and it's not very convenient, but look at it this way...if you have to go back it's a great excuse to buy all those fun accessories!

The software isn't the greatest, but you should be able to access the 12 inch base pantry! Sometimes it won't let you put something in between two cabinets because there isn't quite enough clearance. The solution is to move the cabinets or whatever is in the way, place your appliance, then put the cabinets back. As for filler, leave them out. It'won't render architectural-level drawings, just give you a pretty good idea of what you can put in and what it will look like. It's not terribly detailed, but it is functional software.

Make sure you expand all the different categories, sometimes items are not listed where you expect to see them. For example, the end shelf units are under base cabinets/special base cabinets. And faucets are under Base cabinets/for sink.

What version of the planner do you have? There is a newer version available from the Canadian IKEA website, which has a lot more options etc. The only drawback is that all the prices are in Canadian dollars, which can cause some heart palpitations when you first look at the price list LOL

Just downloaded the version that is currently on the website.

Nothing comes up at all when I click the plus sign next to the base cabinets/special base cabinets... it just shows blank on the right side. :?

That's very odd. Are you under the AKURUM tab? Did you download version 2006:2?

kisaacs, I like your idea about making your kitchen a little bigger than IRL on the planner.

catmom, we used both approaches. Unless your're really good spatially, the 3D planner views provide an invaluable look at different designs you're considering. Once you nail down the design you look, double check the measurements w / a graph paper plan. That's where you can also make note of anything special you're doing like staggered cabinet heights or modifications.
