The current plan...

I am plannning my remodel for early 2008 (too many other projects that need to finish before I tackle a major remodel). I did jump start it the other day by purchasing a built-in frig at a killer price. 1941 bungolow that needs some updating - but nothing major with the exception of the kitchen. Quite tame compared to my last project - a 1904 that we gutted to the bare walls.

Planned layout is below. Currently, frig and stove are on north wall - minimal counter space on the south wall. And no dishwasher. I am planning on closing up a window to put the frig on the south wall. The only thing that sucks is that I am loosing my in kitchen recycling.

The doors in the layout are currently framed openings - I plan on removing the frames and plastering archways to replicate the feel of the dining room and living room.

This will be all DIY - with the possible exception of counter tops (depending on materials). It helps that my Dad is just a phone call away and will be assisting with electrical - he is a electrical engineer by profession - and picked up his masters electrican license in his retirement;-) Plumbing and gas won't move.

I found Ikeafans when searching for a transformer to replace one that had blown in a Sone that I found in AS-IS in the Twin Cities. I always knew that I would have an Ikea kitchen someday - just didn't want to drive to Schuamburg to pick everything up.

Hi ann and welcome!

I like your plan! The only thing that I would suggest is that you check your clearances, it seems like being off an inch or two (especially around the window area) will be a problem. So measure carefully!

Are you planning Adel birch? If so, you may not need cover panels at the exposed sides, with the exception of the one on the side of the fridge. The cabinets come in white or birch boxes so check that out...it might gain you a precious couple of inches. If you want light rail, the cover panels extend down past the bottom of the cabinets to accomodate it, so if you forgo the panels you'll need to miter the light rail at the corners.

cabinets

I am thinking of Adel, Backebo or Kalsebo. I won't order anything until I have the exisiting cabinets out - it's too hard for me to get 100% with the current configuraton - I can't run a nice line from the side wall to the window. And the current cabinets not standard sizes.

I am just excited about tripling my current counter space - and ditching the drain board by the sink;-) I currently have about 30 lineal inches of useable counter space and at times, it shrinks to about 5 sq inches.

::laughter::

I hear you on the counterspace! We had to take over the room next to the kitchen because we had so little counterspace IN the kitchen. 'Course a major driving force there was putting IN a DW, we were both burning out on washing dishes for 4 by hand all the time, and even though we were training Our kids to handle thiers, it took a LONG time as they almost always had to branch out into playing with water rather than focusing on washing the dishes... Well, they were only like 2 and 3 at the time I think, so I suppose we'll have to give them a pass on that.

What's the general style of the bungalow? Any chance there's some Arts & Crafts there? If so , I'd feel obligated to put in a little plug for Tidaholm.
