This kitchen is about 95% identical to what I have planned - Adel White, Lansa handles, dark oak counters. Not so unusual, I know, but also... the Sodak pendants, dark wood shade, lime accessories and the backsplash! Oh, I love the backsplash - mine is so similar, and the very first thing I chose for this kitchen.
The only difference is that my flooring will be cork, probably a chestnut color.
I'm kind of bummed that someone else has already done "my" kitchen, but I guess that there really are no original ideas. Oh well, at least it looks terrific!
That will look great, Nicole - maybe you should go to design school! I love the backsplash too. It makes you want to touch it.
I'm thinking many people have already done my kitchen, since I have Lidingo with nickel cup pulls and a Domsjo sink. A bit predictable, but I love it, and my backsplash jazzes it up a little.
"i think there is something elegant about a clean classic kitchen"
that was my response this week when my design teacher told me my design is a bit boring
in the end the client should be happy, if you love your kitchen idea and it will serve your family AND you believe you'll still love it in 5 yrs then it's a classic and you're onto the right idea
Actually kathy, I have been to design school, and I am a partner in a small decorating company! That's not something I mention a lot, because people assume you have all the answers and then they wonder why you come here asking others opinions (see my recent posts about Lansa handles and changing door styles, for example).
My opinion is that the most important thing you learn in design school is confidence - a "good eye" can be refined, but it can't be taught entirely. The woman who designed this kitchen I linked to didn't need to go to design school to pick out those elements. Because of school, I now have the confidance to tell a client how to achieve their decorating goals, and know what I am saying is right. Mine may not be the only right answer, mind you.
But when it comes to decorating for myself, I hem and haw a lot - mostly because I know that as soon as I finish my project some new product will come out that I will love even more than what I used! For instance, I have Adel White cabs waiting to be installed (we are waiting for the lighting plan to be completed). They are not my absolute fave, but they are the best choice for my goals and space. However, I've got a little tickle in the back of my head suggesting waiting just a bit longer to install those cabs so I can see the new door styles in March.
OMG I'm a nut! The kitchen has been gutted since September 6 (no, we are not living there!), just do the %$*^ thing!
Anyway, I don't even know how I got off on that tangent. Sorry...
dulci, your teacher is a... well, I don't know what s/he is, but it's not good! Did s/he assign you a client profile? Really, it was unprofessional of them to say your design was boring because that is so subjective. I have a good friend who makes a living designing white rooms for people. They aren't full of texture, and I find them quite boring. However, she's got a decent roster of clients, so obviously not everyone agrees with me. Stick to your aesthetic.
Anyway... yea, I'm pleased with how "my" kitchen is going to look. And hey! Hopefully it'll be unique on this continent, at least!
It's a beautiful design, and you will love it. I think that classics are in no way boring; to me it's just like the little black dress- it's how you accessorize, and the uniqueness of every installation.
That's what I really admire about people here- they get it instinctually. IKEA is a set of building blocks that you can totally mess with and create something totally different than the next person's kitchen.
You know, if it speaks to you, do it. It's lovely. Synchronisity does exist.
And BTW, my kitchen is pretty much standard horizontal European with dark counters. So yeah, I see my kitchen everywhere!
I've got to get off my duff here and venture out into the sub zero's and make some progress so I'll have something to blog about! Finalize appliances today...Did buy a sink...and zeroing in on the faucet. I'm thinking Blanco cubiz (?) instead of Franke 1100. I know why I like the 1100- Porsche design! But, the Blanco is similar and substantially cheaper.
