Hello,
I love this web site! Since I joined Ikeafans I learned so much. This site obviously attracts very clever people. I hope you can help me with my dilema. We are planning our kitchen and decided to have sink in the corner (there are some limitations, drain, etc. that forced us to go with this solution). I want to have a double bowl sink in the corner. I know that Ikea sells corner double bowl sink but we want to have regular double bowl instead.
I believe regular sinks are about 31". We will have a butcherblock countertop so I assume we can't have undemount sink. We calculated that we need at least 45-46" for corner cabinet to accomodate standard double bowl sink. Our kitchen will be U shaped. Our plan is as follows:
Wall A (Base Cabinets):
corner sink cabinet (46")
30" deep drawer unit
30" stove
12" pull out base
37" corner cabinet with Lazy Susan (we may add 18"or 24" cabinet to create another arm for a small bar area
Wall B (Base Cabinets):
corner sink cabinet (46")
24" dishwasher
24" deep drawer unit (I learned on this site that it is availbale!!!)
15" tall pantry (24"deep and 88" tall)
refrigerator
Wall A (Wall Cabinets) (all 39" high):
30" wall cabinet with glass doors above 30" base drawer unit
hood above the stove
30" wall cabinet with glass doors
15" wall cabinet with glass door
Wall B (Wall Cabinets) (all 39" high)
24" wall cabinet (no glass) above the dishwasher
24" wall cabinet (no glass) above 24" base drawer unit
I do not know what to do with the corner on the wall. Should we add another 15" wall cabinet on wall A next to 30" wall cabinet with glass door? Should it be 39" or only 30" tall. Will I be able to reach it? Should we add 12" or 15" wall cabinet on wall B? The same question. 39" or 30". What to do with the rest of the corner? It will be really hard to reach there since it will be far. Should we just use shelves? How to construct corner cabinet that will accomodate regular double bowl sink without sacrificing too much space? We want to have angled corner and use 24" doors and maybe 6" drawer front.
I have 156" available on wall A and 145" on wall B. Please help! This is the last issue (I hope) we need to resolve. Initially I thought we would go with white cabinets but I am 99% sure we will buy Adel Medium Brown and use maple butcherblock. I will share pictures as soon as we get there.
You might want to consider professional plumbing or engineering assistance to move your sink. Only one real reason, but it can make a huge difference in your sinkish lifestyle: You have to turn off the faucet to move it between bowls. It's a small thing until you make a wet mess or try to sell the home.
Aside form that, I hope you have a great time doing your Ikea kitchen. You're going to love the results.
Do you have your plans in the planner? If so, can you post pix of them here? There's a tutorial in the
IKEAPedia
on how to do that. It is helpful to get a visual perspective.
One problem I see with your layout is that it sounds like you'll have the sink in that corner unit with the dishwasher right next to it...that will make it impossible to stand at the sink with the dishwasher open. Another issue you'll want to think about is having all that glass on the range wall...that's the place where the grease will accumulate most so you will probably be cleaning the glass continiually!
Thank you to both of you. I will post my plans later today.
Eva, I spent past week browsing this site and I already know that my dishwasher can't be next to the sink. You have already discussed it somwhere else. I have to have at least 18" cabinet next to the sink and then
DW
to be able to load dishes and turn around.
I also understand that the area around the stove is not the greatest place for the glass cabinets. I love cooking but I don't cook as often as I used to because we are empty nester with kids in college.
I would like to have at least two glass cabinets somewhere so your suggestions will be appreciated.

I apologize for complicated password but I forgot my old one and could not figure out how to reset the one supplied by IKEA. If you know how to do it, please hep. I do not want to torture myself and others.
I saved 3 plans. One with the sink in the corner and two with the sink on wall A (wall with window).
I also attach plan of the ground level of our house where we want to locate our new kitchen so you can see the whole area and how it connects with other rooms. We have made some changes to the original plan (closed some openings and made another one to have better traffic flow) The plan already incorporates those changes. Please note that the door on the wall with refrigerator is not actual door, just opening to connect kitchen/dinning with family room where we have a fireplace. The dotted line you see in the middle of kitchen/dinning room is sofit. It drops about 11-12" from the ceiling and is about 17-18" wide. Our floor to ceiling height in other areas is about 92". Half of the room (where we want to have kitchen) has tongue and groove ceiling in natural pine. We have a sliding patio door on the opposite side of wall A. There is a beautiful view through that door.
We want to use
HUSAR
system (IKEA but discontinued) we already have in this room but we do not have to.
I attach picture of HUSAR from older IKEA catalogue. In addition to kitchen cabinets we want to have large dinning room table and maybe small corner seating (possible position indicated on the plan of our ground level) in this room. I like Jenn-Air stainless steel appliances with counter depth fridge and slide in range.
If you do the second plan, I think you should have a filler corner cabinet that kind of connects the two walls of cabinetry. Or you could put in a corner cabinet.
Also, you should have higher cabinets over the sink so that you have plenty of room at the sink. You could put in a horizontal glass cabinet perhaps. Or they make shorter ones for this purpose.
If this was my kitchen (and I like cooking a lot), i would have the stove and fridge a little bit closer together for ease of getting ingredients out and cooking. But you said you don't cook that much so perhaps it is just fine that way.
I like the island in the kitchen. You coudl have stools on the one side for socializing or breakfast.
How much space is there between the stove-countertop and the island? It looks like it might be a little tight. Remember you have to be able to completely open up the oven door and drawers, etc. And if you want to stand behind the over door, and peek inside the oven, it might be hard if your butt bumps into the island!
Thank you for your opinion. I wish I could have fridge closer but I just can't find a good place for it. I did not want to have it next to the
DW
because it does not look good to have two appliances next to each other. That is the reason why I put pantry between DW and fridge. Also I need it closer to the sink because I usually wash everything that I take out. If I decide to go with the sink in the corner I will not use corner wall cabinet but we will install shelves on the walls that will connect cabinets on both sides. We will use it for display items or things I do not use daily. I like kitchen islands. I have enough room and will make sure I have sufficient space between the stove-countertop and the island. Thank you for looking.
