Attached are 2 floor plans that I would like you to critique. In my opinion, they both have positives and negatives and I'm not necessarily in love with either one. On both plans, I have a pantry in the far corner to the right of the entrance to my Great Room. I am moving a door opening to accomodate this, but am concerned that it could be a problem when this cabinet is open it would block the entrance to that room. If I do not move that wall, it would give me more wall space to the left of that opening. I am hoping to eliminate most upper cabinets along the "L" as I prefer that look. I will be adding windows to either side of the existing window. If I keep the range on the wall layout, there will be a hood that would be the focal point. If I use the refrigerator layout, not sure what I would do with the empty space to the left. Shelving? I am also including a copy of the current floor plan(last link) and a photo of the existing kitchen for referenece if needed. Anyway, thanks for taking a look. I'm looking for something "innovative". Love to hear what you think.....
I like the current floor plan best, actually, but I would change to a corner range and put the sink on the island and extend the island down towards the eating area like you have in the first drawing. I'm not a fan of island cooktops.
Have you considered a U shape kitchen with a peninsula by the sliding door and a wall of tall opposite (where you have the dresser now)? Would you consider changing the slider to a single french door to open up more wall space on the outside wall?
I actually started a floor plan in the Ikea planner. How can I get it to you? The cabinets I picked are actually more as place holders at this point. Would that help you at all to visualize the space?
So what you're saying is leave the refrigerator where it is right now, put the range in the corner and then move the sink to the island. I'm assuming that's where the diswasher would go as well? Are there ranges that will fit in the corner? I don't think I've ever seen that.
Funny you should mention the peninsula. That was the original layout when we bought the house, but of course everyone "needs" an island so we got rid of the peninsula. My only concern about the peninsula is that I then have to "walk around it" to get to the kitchen table. Am I being lazy? Just concerned. How long would you make the peninsula if the width of the room is 13 1/2 feet? Where would you put the appliances if I did it that way?
I don't object to making the sliders a single French Door to lengthen that wall of cabinets. Wonder how expensive that is to do. I guess I could then add more windows and that would fulfill my need to limit my upper cabinets. I just really like that look and think it makes the kitchen look less "kitcheny."
Thanks for your help. You've got a great eye. I've seen some of your threads on Garden Web as well.
Here's a VERY basic floor plan so you can get an idea of the space. The wall at the other end of the kitchen where the table will be is a full brick fireplace. Will need to do something with that as well but have to take baby steps first. Didn't really spend any time on getting the cabinet sizes right. Just wanted to fill the space to start with. I am open to ANY changes. Anything is up for grabs.
If you want to post of PM your IKEA username and password, I can try to work out some plans for you on the planner and save them to your space.
Thank you for your kind words! I really enjoy kitchen design, it's a creative outlet for me.
I think your kitchen should be exactly what works for you, and I don't care a whit what "everyone" thinks. "Everyone" doesn't have to live there! Do what you want, even if it isn't what "everyone" would do. You'll be happier. And who knows, maybe you'll start a trend....I did! I took out a wall and opened up my kitchen, something NO ONE does around here. But now "everyone "who sees it loves it and wants to do it in their house. So have no fear!
