What should I budget for electrical work?

I'm still looking for an electrician in our area to do some work for us, but in the meanwhile I'm wondering what I should budget for it.

Any thoughts on how much work would be involved in the following:

* Relocating 2 wall outlets (one would be raised about a foot so that it is not covered by a base cabinet, the other will be moved from a wall we will be taking down to the adjacent wall).
* Adding a new outlet for a range (current range is hardwired stovetop).
* Installing extractor fan above range
* Installing about 6' of undercabinet lighting.

I know that rates vary throughout the country, but I'm just trying to get a feel for how much work this would involve. Half a day, full day, two days? Should I budget $300 or $3000?

Thanks,
claire

Is it just the work or also supplies (like the UC lights?)

I think that our undercabinet lights ran around $800 installed but we have about 20 feet of them...
I'd probably budget for a solid 8hrs of time plus materials. Our electrician is $100 for the first hour and $80/hr after that so maybe $1000?

The easiest thing is to get a bid going for the work.... Best of luck!

Electrical for our big remodel was WAAAAAAAAYYYYYY more than I ever expected. It was a big job, but still. Geesh.

I'd say get a couple of quotes because they could be vastly different and you'd never really know how much it's gonna cost until you pick an electrician/handy man.

Sorry. I'd hate for anyone to try to give you an estimate and you get caught w/not enough funds in the budget.

Stacylu is also correct in reminding us all that labor and material are not to be lumped together. Don't even get me started on how much lights cost when you don't go the IKEA route. Ouch!

I should correct my above guesstimate - because whatever I thought it would be should be at least doubled. So $2000

And RE supplies - the copper for wiring has increased tremendously recently and it's about $100 a roll. We rewired about half of our house and used a ton of wire and it got very spendy, very fast...

relocating outlets and wiring for UC lights...

are not difficult. i highly recommend buying the black and decker home wiring book and doing it yourself. the book contains all the info you need to do it safely and cost effectively.

We hired an electrician a couple of times, to install recessed cans, outlets, etc. Pretty straightforward stuff. It came to about $100 per thing he did, roughly, including materials and supplies.

Thanks everyone. All of this is good feedback. I definitely think my hubby can handle some of the basic work, so I'm going to budget $1000 for anything that we can't do our selves. I think that should cover it.
