First post, love this site -- my "final" floorplan

Wow, what a great site, can't believe it took me this long to find it.

Been using the Planner to layout our new kitchen. Lidingo with Numerar Oak and Domsjo sink. Very conservative look. A total DIY project on a tight budget, but no electrical/plumbing changes. Just swapping cabinets, keeping floor and appliances. (Should be easy, right -- even with 3 small kids in the house.... ),

Attached is the our "final" plan (no stove, couldn't get it to work in the planner), getting ready to order, trying to learn about the process and what I need to do (what's a draft order?). IKEA kitchen staff told me Lidingo (and Oak) are in stock for pick-up, despite what the catalog says.

Any feedback on our plan? Essentially identical to current layout, which has custom (but cheaply built) cabinets. The space on the far left wall facing the window in view1 are pipes (enclosed in a 9" wide box) that run from an upstairs bathroom. The cabinets now are built around this and hide it somewhat, but I'm not going to try and hack the IKEA cabinets.

I'm kind of unclear about the trim pieces/mouldings for the cabinets. They will be mounted flush with the ceilings (my ceilings are low, only 84" tall) and right now I have crown mouldings).

Also unclear about how to treat my countertops, but I guess that is another thread.

My biggest fear with this project is finding out the condition of the walls after I take out the existing cabinets and whether it will require I hire a professional to repair the plaster walls. Also have to research best way to anchor into my plaster walls.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Hi and welcome!

I am assuming your range would go in that empty spot next to that doorway? If so, I'd strongly recommend you go with a blind 49" corner cabinet instead of the 37" right angle cabinet, and put a cabinet of at least 12 inches on the right of the range. It's a very dangerous location to have the side of a stove right at a doorway, and you've got small kids. I'd hate to see one of them get hurt with a hot stove side!

For trim you could use the decor strip, turned flat on the side, and attach it either to the top of your cabinets or directly to the ceiling. Since the cabinets are full overlay doors, if your ceiling wiggles at all you may find the doors binding on the ceiling at some point.

With ceilings at 84" and countertop at 36", that leaves you with 48 inches for cabinet and backsplash. If you set your cabinets bottom at 17 or 17 1/2, you'll have 30 1/2 to 31" for your wall cabinets to go...which is tight. Check your ceiling for wiggles before you set the suspension rail!

There are many threads on the relative merits of different wood countertop treatments. Do a search for waterlox, tung oil, mineral oil, beeswax....lots of options.

Wow, I hadn't thought of that. It was the location of the range when we moved into the house 6 years ago and I never even realized it is considered dangerous.

Another good point I hadn't thought of. My current cabinets are inset doors, so the ceiling is not an issue, but it could definitely come into play with the new IKEA overlay doors.

Thanks!

Fortunately the NKBA has thought about all of these things and published handy guidelines for kitchen design. Unfortunately they are no longer available on their website, but you can get it through Google's cache
