Former Lurker: Please take a look at this kitchen plan (current and would-be after)
Hi Ikea fans!
This is a long one - please forgive me :-)
I have been lurking on this site for a while and am excited to finally be able to post our would-be kitchen plan. We are in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn NY and about to embark on a renovation of our kitchen. We had not been big on cooking but now that I work from home very often that is changing. And we have so much kitchen stuff piled on the counter, stacked beside the refrigerator & piled in the foyer closet that it's clear we need more kitchen storage space.
I did update the kitchen when I first moved in back in 1997 and plans of the current kitchen are in the attached link (it is not an Ikea Kitchen but I did use the Ikea planner to give you an idea of the space we are working with). The cabinets are white slab doors with black knobs and black laminte countertops. The old kitchen had an exposed brick backsplash, lime green cabinets and very tight quarters. I moved the refrigerator outside of the "kitchen" proper and it's been sitting there for nearly 10 years looking out of place. :-(
We kept the refrigerator and range from the old homeowners but they are both on their last legs. I have put a 30" range in as a placeholder as well as a 36" refrigerator. I'm not sure how deep to make the above refrigerator cabinets or for that matter how tall they should be given that we are tossing out our Kenmore refrigerator (31 x 31 x 64) and we have not decided on a replacement model. Are their typical dimensions for those w/o the new appliances?
It's a small galley kitchen surrounded by walls and beams that we cannot move so we have to work within the space. We are not allowed to have a dishwasher in the apartment building so sadly you will not find one in the plan :-(
The area we currently use as a breakfast table is too tiny (usually only one of us sits at a time) so we want to install a breakfast bar (only need room for 2).
* Items to note:
The plan is for slab front cabinets (Applad) and includes Lansa 9" handles.
The cabinets by the refrigerator do not go across the full wall since there is a soffit (9" wide x 6" high) that runs the length across the top of the window. I found nothing to place in the remaining 6" space (also needs to be 9" from the ceiling). Any ideas?
Ignore the space to the far right behind the microwave cabinet wall. It was easier to change the dimensions of a heater instead of creating another inner wall. ;-)
There is currently a range hood installed under the cabinet above the range. I could not find one in the planner so I left it out. There will also be a range hood installed in the new design - probably stainless to match the Lansa handles.
I want to use sliding glass front doors but did not find them in the Kitchen Planner. I put the regular glass front doors in the plan. Are the slding glass doors discontinued or are they only availalbe for certain door styles?
We have laminate countertops now and I have never liked them. It was affordable at the time but now I want something else. I have never had a butcher block counter but did include them in the plan. I would love to have granite counters but I think that will add about $3,000 to the renovation price tag. Any thoughts on butcher block counters or something that is not as expensive as granite? Or maybe even a suggestion of where to find inexpensive granite in Brooklyn, NY?
Finally, I am not handy and DH never installed or put together kitchen cabinets so we will need to hire someone. What should we budget for delivery and installation charges?
I can only see the first picture, Snapfish is asking me to register to see the rest. Do you have them uploaded elsewhere, or do you have your plan in the IKEA planner saved to IKEA space? If so, you can post or PM your username and password for your IKEA space and we can take a look at it there.
The wall behind the stove houses plumbing and such so it's 7 inches further in than the refrigerator wall. In the new plan I left the wall open behind the frig but there is really a wall there ;-)
OK I took a look at your plan! Tiny space, but definitely can be improved!
First, to answer your questions: Are their typical dimensions for those w/o the new appliances? Ranges are generally 30" wide, fridges you would do well to leave 36" if you can, but you can certainly go smaller. Sears has several 30" wide models and I'd definitely recommend that for your space.

I would recommend a different handle. Lansa's are big and require lots of clearance for the handle. Going with a knob or smaller handle will eliminate the need for extra filler...important in your space!

Yes, I have an idea!

I'd recommend going with an OTR microwave instead. You can still attach it to the ducting but it will free up some valuable cabinet space to put the micro above the range.

They have been discontinued AFAIK because of problems with the glass falling out!

Brooklyn is chock-full of tile people! It's a craftsman trade that is very popular in the area. I'd suggest looking into granite tile countertops, they are much cheaper and with the great labor pool available in your area you should be able to find someone to do it as a side job.

IKEA should give you a list of their qualified installers, or you could go with an openminded handyman if you want to. I have no idea of the prices in your area though!
I did a plan for you that you might like. I moved the breakfast bar to face the window...no one likes to face a wall if there's any other option!...and created a wall of shallow storage opposite the fridge. If you don't need the countertop there, I'd suggest going with shallow tall pantries instead of the base/wall cabinet combo. I used glass cabs for all the wall cabs on that side. I also changed out the cabinets above the sink and range to shorter ones so you don't bonk your head when you do dishes and you have some wall space for a paper towel holder or utensils or such. I added an OTR micro as well, and centered your range between two 15" drawer units. Having a range in the corner is never a good idea and in your case there is a better option. You should always have counter space on either side of the range. I also changed out the base cabinets on the other side to two big 36" drawer units, so you should have plenty of space for everything. It gives you more storage than the plan you had as well as making your dining experience a little more pleasant.

Let me know what you think!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have not seen the new plan yet (don't know how to access it from my work laptop) but as soon as I get home tonight I am logging in to the kitchen planner. It sounds fantastic!!!
Thank you so much for all of the great ideas (granite tile is genius) and thank you even more so for designing a better kitchen plan for our space :-) I really appreciate the help.
You should have enough room under the window to do a shallow base cabinet with a 12" eating bar overhang if you go with the narrower fridge.
All the wall cabinets on the side opposite the sink and range and fridge are glass doors. All the ones on the sink/range wall are solid doors.
The distance between the two sides of the kitchen is a little tight but at a bit less than 36" not impossible.
I was wondering where the doorway is...I'm assuming on the wall adjacent to the sink?
Anyway hope you like it!
Thank you so much. How do you put up screen shots? These are great!!
Only one problem - the doorway is opposite the refrigerator. It's an opening to the living room. So all the lovely glass cabinets and shallow storage wont' fit. The other door way is by the sink.
Would it be crazy to close off the opening to the living room? Most people renovate to open up their kitchen and I am considering closing ours. lol
How to post screen shots are in a tutorial in the IKEAPedia, accessible from the main IKEAFans page.
You could close off the doorway if it isn't terribly functional for you. You could certainly use the wall space more than a second entry unless the traffic path is a big problem. If you don't close it off, you might be able to fit one cabinet in there, they are 36" wide so losing one would be plenty of room for a doorway. Where exactly is the doorway?
The other thing you might be able to do is to open that wall up (at least halfway down) and turn the area into an island with seating on the living room side. Without knowing the floorplan of the whole space I can't say if that would work or not.

Thanks so much Eva!
The doorway is opposite the refrigerator. It's a 62" wide opening starting from the would be bar area wall. I will see if I can get a screen shot to work.
My husband raises a good point about the wall. The bar area wall portrudes into the would be formal dining area by 1" while the cabinet wall 62" away protrudes into the living room by 3". Installing a wall won't be as easy as I thought. :-(
