Designing small 3 x 3 m kitchen... puzzled!

I will be attempting to design a basic kitchen in a 3m by 3 m floor plan, with two doorways and existing sink/down drain.

I don't have a sketch up yet but just picture a square, with clock positions, like:
sink at 10:00 corner
doorway at 1:30 corner
doorway at 5;00 corner
(planned eating area alongside the 3:00 wall)

I was pretty confident I could handle it easily, until I started to place common-size components on a paper sketch..

Any advice (besides keeping at it!)?

Re: Designing small 3 x 3 m kitchen... puzzled!

So I have read your other posts and pieced together some thoughts...although I have no idea how you are going to fit a dishwasher in this space! I also don't know if I have the correct measurements, this is just a guess as to where things currently lie. I suggest that you place your trash container in the corner by the sink...this corner isn't large enough to place a cabinet, so this would be a way of using all of the space.

Even if the cabinets of US vs Europe aren't the same size, this will at least give you an idea of what it could look like. But, like I said, this is just a guess at your measurements/space.

Re: Designing small 3 x 3 m kitchen... puzzled!

Thanks RP!
My poor description had you put some elements, like doors in the wrong places... sorry!

I am making progress in the sense that I will favor the triad sink-workspace-range (cooker) above all else.

Overall, the room setup may drift into funky, in a good way. I am eyeing a few non-kitchen Ikea elements that are shallow, like glass-door bookcases.
I plan on keeping a small kitchen table that is dear to me, 90 x110 or so, which makes everything even tighter!

New ideas:
1. kitchen is next to the living room, so there is a possibility of opening up the wall in that direction (displacing the problem, perhaps?).
2. one side of k. shares a wall with a closet, partially; so I may be able to recess some elements in there, like the fridge.
3. there are large hallway closets, a small extra pantry could live in one of them.

I will be on location next month, camping-kitchen style. I may then do mock-ups with wire shelving and what-not, and then go back to the planner.

Re: Designing small 3 x 3 m kitchen... puzzled!

Hey metricpoodle,

Well...it was worth a shot! I am very intrigued with the small space concept. My kitchen right now is a small U and I am getting rid of a wall and moving that wall during a remodel for half of my house, so I am definitely an advocate to moving or getting rid of a wall if it gets in the way of your dream kitchen!

If you look at my thread post for my kitchen, personalshopper helped me to put together a plan that incorporated my grandmother's antique hoosier cabinet into my kitchen, so I totally understand wanting to work in space for your beloved table.

If I were you, I would consider closing up that closet and making an opening into the kitchen to make it into your pantry since it will be highly unlikely that you will be able to work a pantry into your kitchen cabinet plan...just a suggestion, take it or leave it. I have a pantry in my closet down the hall right now, and I hate it! Such a bother to put away the groceries and to get out the items I need for cooking dinner, so I REALLY look forward to having a pantry in my kitchen.

Good luck with your remodel! Please post the mock-up of your kitchen once you get it done in the planner.

-Reese
