We remodeled our kitchen a year ago with Ikea cabs. It's a great kitchen but I made a last minute change with the cabs that I now regret. I changed from Lidingo white to Adel Medium Brown. They are beautiful, but since I really wanted white I'm not 100% in love. So- now I'm thinking about painting these white-- good idea? Anyone done it? If so, what were your results and if you have pictures, I'd love to see them.
Sarah Richardson has done several remodeled-for-TV kitchens in which she used Ikea cabinets and had the doors painted. Good luck with the transformation!
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm wondering if anyone has painted themselves-- what those results are. I think if I were to get them professionally painted, I might as well just buy new doors. Not a bad idea.. haha.. but not in my budget.
I'm the contractor who has previously commented on painting Ikea doors. I have done it many times for custom built-ins where I have used Ikea doors (usually Adel or Ramsjo - see pics). My method usually involves on-site spraying with satin alkyd enamel - no primer, just straight paint, using a 3000 psi airless sprayer and a very fine spray tip.
If you are ambitious, you could consider renting such an apparatus from a tool rental place and doing it yourself. Once everything is set up you can paint an entire kitchen in mere minutes. But be prepared to do an enormous amount of masking beforehand!
That is my link from above for professionally painting the cabinets. Having the cabinet doors professionally painted wasn't cheap, but it does keep the mess out of the house and give a very durable finish, which in the case of my client was still cheaper than going with another manufacturer's doors.
One other thought is trying the new line of kitchen cabinet paint at Home Depot. I haven't tried it, but it looks like it would be more durable then a traditional paint. I have had mixed results brushing on "regular" paint (I've used both latex and oil over the years). In my own house I painted my wood island with an oil paint and it is holding up reasonably well, but after 4 years need quite a bit of touch up near the handles (I do have 2 small kids which doesn't help).
