Kitchend 3D design - need advice to missing components
I am so glad I found this forum. I am planning my kitchen with the 3D software and have some issues. I am not able to do certain designs; some very important features are missing in the US version.
I would like to incorporate a desk into the kitchen cabinets that would be topped without countertop. This doesn’t seem to be an option at all.
I would also like to add a sitting bar adjacent to the cabinets topped with a half countertop. It would be for 2 persons only and 50 inches long. There are no other than regular depth countertops available to design or listed online. Does Ikea sell countertops in a customer specified length? Or are the countertops only 49.5”; 73”, and 97” wide and only 26” deep?
As I was in the Ohio Ikea store, I’ve seen some configurations that I can’t find in the catalog or on the web site. Can be L-shaped countertops ordered?
Do you know if the Ikea employees can use client’s 3D designs by importing them into their software from our online designs? Is this available to the customers; is it free as in other stores?
The closest store is 2.5 hours away and I would like to make only one shopping trip if possible.
I’ve emailed Ikea, however they didn’t answer any of my questions. I was emailed a phone number instead. I called the number, however it states that they have unexpectedly long waiting time and to email them. Ask Anna! Option lists only items from online catalog which I went through already. I feel as running in a circle.
I love Ikea and I would like to upgrade my house to their standards.
I will try to call Ikea tomorrow in the morning again, in the mean time I would like to ask anybody in here if you could help me with my design. I am not sure how to deal with the sitting bar and built in desk.
I am attaching pictures of what I’ve done so far. The 3D software is limiting me do a complete design. Top cabinets are Abstract Grey High gloss, bottom are Applad White.
I was thinking to put a bar table in the first option. And attaching a half width countertop as a bar table and attach it with Capita brackets in second option. I like the second option better; however the fridge position prevents 3 feet of access between the fridge and the bar.

The planner can be tricked into doing some of the things you mentioned, but it would be easier to do it on your plan, and explain it that way. Can you post what you have done so far?
Re: Kitchend 3D design - need advice to missing components
Okay, let's see if I understood your raised eating bar and desk locations. I tried to mock them up here; they're not to be taken literally. I just wanted to see if I was on the right track.
One thing I would urge you to consider is moving the refrigerator so that it intrudes less on the entire room. This way, you have accessible, open counter space that could be used as buffet or beverage-prep space when you entertain. I was concerned that the cabinet sizes you had on that wall might not quite fit, so I reduced the run from 60" to 54".
The tall cabinets in the desk area seemed top-heavy to me, so I tried to lighten them up a little and make them tie in with the shorter cabinets in the rest of the room.
Feel free to reject any or all suggestions. I'm a big girl. I can take it.
Re: Kitchend 3D design - need advice to missing components
personalshopper,
Thank you so much for such a fast redesign, I like it, especially the wall cabinets variation. I will show it to my hubby, I hope he likes it too.
So we should get a 30" cabinet frame to make the desk? Or is there a table available we could slide in, so it would have a drawer as well? I was originally thinking of having L-shaped countertop over that corner covering the desk as well. If a desk wouldn't be available, could I use some panel at the end of the desk for the right side?
The 50 by 15 inches bar top -, could that be made out of a countertop material to match the rest of the kitchen?
I like the idea with the fridge being moved. What would be the side panel made of? Would that be custom? The ceiling box starts @ 83-1/2" and is 12-3/4" tall. We have exactly 8 feet wide wall in there and the 78-3/4" opening isn't framed. I would like to leave it as that.
I realize I ask too many questions. I hope I will be able to talk to someone from Ikea over the phone to ask more.
Re: Kitchend 3D design - need advice to missing components
Icefox, I apologize for being a little short on time this morning. A few answers:
You can make the raised countertop the same material as your countertop, but I can't figure out a way to do it in the Ikea planner. That's why I faked it. Speaking of countertop material, if your budget will let you use something other than Ikea's laminate tops, you'll wind up with neater looking corners and angles. Custom laminate countertops, maybe?
The side panel for the refrigerator is a 3x8 piece of Ikea coverpanel, cut to fit that space.
Desk: I hope someone else will chime in with some ideas. If not, I'll play around with it tonight. So to be clear...you want that entire L shape to have countertop at desk height?
Gotta go. Impatient dog wants to be walked before I leave for work. Have a good day.
Re: Kitchend 3D design - need advice to missing components
Personalshopper, no need to apologize, I can wait and I appreciate your great help. I do not worry anymore about showing it in the 3D planner. You fixed my 3D issues and questions.
I got finally in contact with Ikea today. The laminate countertops are only in 3 sizes and are to be cut by ourselves. That is not gonna look professionally, so I can’t go this route for sure. As you mentioned, I will have to find a local store to fit my L-shape needs. I don’t really want to spend a lot of money, our household is on a budget.
The desk
I would really love to have it in the kitchen, I use laptop while cooking already and don’t have a clean space for it. Plus it would be good for other purposes, not speaking about the fact, that most todays US kitchens have desk incorporated into kitchen. I am thinking of reselling value as well. And yes, I would like it to be in one level, though I also like your design.
The Ikea lady told me that it would be a problem to make it without a cabinet frame that it wouldn’t hold and asked me how would I attach the bottom of the right side to the floor. I am thinking now to put a 30” cabinet frame in and that the top of the cabinet frame would serve as a bottom of a drawer. I am just wondering if I could leave the bottom of the cabinet off so the floor would be visible. I would have to support the sides to a wall with metal brackets. I would put baseboard down to hide the brackets on the bottom. The lady also said I could purchase separate drawers @ Ikea. I just can’t find them on their web site.
My hubby will be home soon, I hope he likes your design, I'll let you know later.

personalshopper,
I am so glad to let you know that your design was finally approved by my hubby. We will put the fridge where you designed it.
I have one question for you. Where would you put a microwave? Are Ikea microwaves a good quality? I am open to more changes if needed.
Also, if I would have a problem making the desk and couldn’t do it; what would you design instead of it? Just a regular base cabinet? Or maybe a side shelf? Or something else?
Thanks bunch
P.S. the two 30" horizontal cabinets on the top of the 67" opening on my original design were to be placed to the top of our ceiling, which I couldn't do with thee limited 3D software.
I am even thinking of making an arch in the 67" opening. I believe cabinets would not look good in that case. Maybe just a shelf?: LACK Wall shelf - white - IKEA
Re: Kitchend 3D design - need advice to missing components
I'm very pleased that he likes the refrigerator location. For a microwave, I always look for a likely place that is about 24" wide, and close to the refrigerator. I think the cabinet to the left of your sink might be ideal.
For the microwave itself, there are a few options. One would be a countertop model that would sit on the bottom shelf of the wall cabinet, with either an 15" or 18" high door above it. There are a few over-the-counter microwaves on the market. GE makes a couple models and another (my personal favorite because I love the appearance) is made by Sharp. The Sharp model exhausts out the bottom and has a built in light to give you under-cabinet lighting over that little stretch of countertop. Over the Counter Microwaves
Back later when I've had time to think more about the desk challenge....
But now you need something to attach them to. Yes, the base cabinets have holes drilled especially for this purpose. HOWEVER, the base cabinets are designed to be a box on legs. The sides are not designed to come in contact with the floor. The box is designed to need all the sides, top, floor and hardware for structure. You can't leave any of those parts out!
You could buy the 5/8" thick, 3' x 8' cover panel that is intended to contact the floor (you would cut it to size and use it to box in the refrigerator) and use a piece of that as the side of your desk.
If you want the desk top to be 24" deep, you could purchase a 24" tall over-refrigerator cabinet to use as the side. (With attached legs, it would be standard desk height of 30"). You'd cut it narrower to any of these widths for which there is a 24" tall door.
12", 15", 18", 21"
Then, using your other base cabinets as a template, you could drill holes and attach the drawer glides.
