what are cover panels for?

hi! this may well be a very stupid question but as im designing the kitchen, i can not figure out what these cover panels do. do i need them only on the exposed ends? what about the part of the high pantry cabint that has a base cab next to it open shelving next to the top part of it? thanks!

Re: what are cover panels for?

the answer to your questions depends on a few things which door style and box color (white or birch) you are using, how you want your kitchen to look and how cleanable you want everything to be.

I would (though we forgot to and now its too late) put a coverpanel on the side of a high cabinet next to a base and open shelves regardless of the door style and box color for continuity and cleaning sake. If you were using white boxes and a white door style (though they are different whites and different materials) it is less necessary. If you are using any of the other doors in combination with either box style you would probably want one to cover up the non matching box sides.

Re: what are cover panels for?

thanks for the clarification. im using white boxes with white doors. if the boxes are showing on the sides to they look cheap~ like the melamine vaneer shelves from target that peel up over time? another curiosity i have is~ why would one choose the birch affect box with white fronts? and it is a plastic birch vaneer, right? ide love pics of this combo if anyone has them~ white doors with birch boxes, or white boxes with no cover panels. thanks again!

Re: what are cover panels for?

The purpose of the cover panels is to finish the exposed end of the kitchen cupboards and to match them with the doors that you have chosen.

If you do not use them IMHO it will look like you forgot to fit them!

You need them on every exposed end or side. This means the end of a run, both sides of a tall cupboard where it meets standard sized cupboards (or stands alone) and where you have a shorter cupboard, e.g. for an extractor.

Remember also that where you have an end panel on a wall cupboard you also need one on the corresponding base cupboard and vice versa. If you do not do this the cupboards will not line up and will either look odd at the end or leave you with a gap when you try and attach them to a tall cupboard.
