This site is so informative that I'm spending more time here than I am working on the kitchen. Great ideas!! Has anyone modified a 15" base cabinet to accommodate a letter size hanging file cabinet. Thx T
I've been waiting to see someone do this, but I've never seen a perfect solution posted here. Maybe someone will surprise us!
I think some people have used the sort of open-sided box type frames (freestanding) within the 15" drawer, but space is limited because of the curved inside edges of the drawers. I bet there's a pullout frame on the market somewhere, like a trash pullout, but with file capacity.
My wife and I used a shallow 15" cabinet and simply bent a coat hanger to use as the support for the hanging files. No, it doesn't look good, but it works well. The folders are side to side, there was just enough space. If I had more and better material to work with, I would have made something nicer, but this was handy, and it did the job.
Kathy, I was assuming I'd use the metal frames in the 30" wide drawer as a lateral file as well. DentedVW- I love the hangers! Sometimes we really don't need to over think things!
I'll second the suggestion for Office Supply hanging frames. These stand-alone hanging frames can be used in several different drawer depths (12-24") and for either letter or legal size folders. They're only about $2-3 ea.
They're very sturdy, heavy wire, meant for holding weight. There's a front & back "frame" end-piece, and then rails that you screw onto the top of these (rails are usually length-adjustable, too). I'm thinking the coat hangers will deform once the folders start filling up. My dedicated legal-size 2-drwr oak file cabinet has flat rails that have deformed under weight.
Ikea actually sells (or sold) hanging file frames for their office file cabinets (I have one at work), but it's not as large or as sturdy as the old Globe-Weiss hanging frames that we use in our metal file cabinets.
I am trying to figure out the same issue. It would help if I new the exact vertical depth of each drawer in the 15" 3 - drawer stack. So far, it seems (from what I've been reading here) that it's not an issue to hold an 8.5" x 11" letter sized folder - just that the structure to hang the files on doesn't fit quite right due to the curved bottom of the drawer and makes it unable to close (according to one person). But I'm not sure and I need to order the right cab.
Now, I've been reading about the metafile system and this seems to be the best and least bulky of the other free standing metal frames considered. So - in theory it should work - except I am assuming that at least one of the drawers in the 15" 3-drawer stack is at least 9" deep (vertically).
I've searched but have not been able to get a clear answer on the depth of these drawers. Anyone out there have a clue? Anyone already do this and can report? How 'bout it US66252?
I received the meta-file from Rockler. I will be stopping by my sister most likely tomorrow or going to IKEA over the weekend to try and see if this works in the 15" or 18" draw.
