Old Frigidaire/IKEA Pullout Range Hood Venting

This is an odd question, and I haven't posted here before, but it looks like if anyone would know an an answer to my problem, it would be someone on this forum.

I'm installing an IKEA kitchen, and over a year ago I also bought a closeout Frigidaire Luftig pullout range hood, model GLHV36T5KW. It came new in the box, and functionally, I've tested it to be working perfectly. Unless I've totally lost my memory and a part, the box contained only the fan, instructions, and a round, twist-locking, plastic vent takeoff with built-in back-draft dampers. As I had no recirculation kit and was told it would cost me $150 just to buy filters, I figured I'd vent outside.

Looking at the fan, I assumed the takeoff was either 4 or 5 inches.
Based on what was available at a local supply house, I mortared a 4" back-draft-shuttered exhaust box on the outside of my house and ran 4" galvanized vent pipe into my kitchen.

Now, as I'm getting ready to hook up the vent to the pipe, I've realized that the takeoff on the fan is actually 120mm or 4-3/4 inches. I somehow looked over this in the installation instructions the many times I scanned it.

The question is, when IKEA was selling this fan and Frigidaire was supporting it (years ago now, I know), how did people deal with this non-standard vent size? At this point, the only foolproof solution I've come up with is to have a custom reducer fabricated for me. The CSR at my local IKEA kitchen center was in the store when they sold these units, and doesn't remember anyone having an installation issue with them, but can't see how everyone didn't have a problem, unless all of their units came with an adapter (reducer/increaser) and mine didn't ... or unless they somehow sold me a European unit at the Philadelphia IKEA.

FYI, Frigidaire tech support seems unable to provide useful advice on this or probably any question about any product they ever sold.

Anyone have any ideas / experience regarding this issue? Thanks.

Hi, Josh,

Unfortunately, I don't have a hood vented to the outside, so I can't answer your question, but I wanted to say welcome!

And we've got a wealth of knowledge around here, so I hope someone has come across your issue before and can shed some light on it for you!

Well, I ended up fashioning my own union out of a crimped, galvanized reducer and duct sealant. I was just incredulous that Frigidaire got away with manufacturing something so idiotic. Thanks.

I've been blogged!
Glad you found a workaround- so frustrating!! But, you have a working fan! And we're always fans of folks who "make a way!"

Please provide some tips range hood

My current wall cabinet measures 1230; Ikea is 1530. The question I have is how can I deal with the vent to the opening on the wall now that the opening is slightly covered due to the change in size of the cabinet (from 1230 to 1530)? I would appreciate your insight.

Ines, if I understand you correctly, you have a vent hole that is partially covered by your new cabinet. I'd say there's no solution for that other than to remove the cabinet, remove the vent pipe from the other side of the wall, patch everything over and create a new layout that works correctly with your new cabinet. If I'm not understanding your problem, please elaborate.

FWIW, I installed a recessed fan, which takes up most of the cabinet space, and vented out the top of the cabinet and over to a finished wall, all using exposed vent piping (not a bad look actually). So I don't have a vent situation like you do.

vent hood

Actually when I took out the old vent hood for inspection, the 1530 cabinet will cover the opening. I'm thinking perhaps I can adjust the opening and vent it from there. If not possible, I may just opt for the non vent hood, instead.

Re: Old Frigidaire/IKEA Pullout Range Hood Venting

An outside-venting hood is always preferred, but I've seen lots of filtered vent installations that work fine. Definitely an easier approach.
