I thought I had finally arrived on a workable kitchen design. Then, last night I read an article by a cabinet installer in Fine Homebuilding magazine. The guy said that he doesn't like the look of doors that are narrower than 15" because the outside trim on the door becomes bigger than the middle panel. He thought it looked funny and out of proportion. My kitchen design has 24" upper cabinets on either side of the range hood. Each cabinet has 2 12" doors. Will this look strange? I'm particularly worried because I was thinking about using Adel doors, which have wide trim. Does anyone want to share their view of these narrow doors? Do you have any pictures of 12" doors in real life? I don't live near an Ikea, so I am trying to imagine how it will look in my head.
I think it largely depends on your doorstyle. Backebo, for instance, has a very narrow "frame", with a wider center panel. I have STAT, and have 3 12" doors -- 2 wall cabinets in a hutch arrangement, and 1 base cabinet door on a pull-out. I don't think it looks funny at all. Most important, though, is what YOU think.
Here's a shot that shows all 3 12" doors. The sink base and glass front wall cabinet are 36", so each have 2 18" doors, for comparison:
Time to go get dinner!

Sorry this photo isn't a straight-on view, but the left end of the island has a 12" base pullout plus a 24" wall cabinet (used as a base), then a couple inches filler, then a 30" and a 15" drawer base. The spacing was a bit awkward because of the weird pillar/wall that sits in the middle of the island, so we decided it would be best to visually separate the drawers and the doors. I'm not hung up on symmetry, thanks to my 7th grade art teacher, so it works for me. The 12" doors look fine to me. My door style is Lidingo, which has a pretty definite frame.
We're putting up 2 sets of 24" cabinets (Adel Medium Brown) this weekend... I'll get some pictures once they're up... Remind me if I don't post some pictures here

They're up minus a few piece of trim and the handles (which DH is finishing up today!)
Left to right is 1-36", 1-30" and 2-24" cabinets! I'm in love with them!
And BTW, excuse the mess!

Ok, just started a thread, great idea. And my hubby is a star - he knows his stuff and I'm a lucky woman. I mainly just hold things and fetch things for him
