Question New homeowner - plan reviews appreciated!

Hi everyone,

Great to have found this site! My wife and I are first time homeowners and are working on planning an Ikea kitchen to replace the yellowish (formerly white) kitchen in our townhouse. We're hoping to take advantage of the current promotion (in Canada ) for a $100 gift card for every $1000 spent, but we need to place the order by April 1. (not alot of time!)

It would be great to get some comments on our plan. We have pseudo-galley kitchen, with an L-shaped end. The available space is 12' by 7'10". There's a door to a patio at the end of the walking area (next to the fridge) that isn't shown. The entry is narrow, but not quite as narrow as it looks, since the actual room has a 45 degree wall next to the oven "block" of the kitchen (hard to describe).

Some issues we're working through (maybe you guys can help on?):
- Narrow entry. I'd like to open this up by removing the short pantry next to the sink, but I can't think of a way to do this without having the sink right on the edge of the counter. The current plan has the entry about 4" narrower than our current kitchen (current width is fine).
- Location of sink. On my Ikea profile there's another option with the sink facing the wall where the cabinets are. Do you guys think this would be a better option? I think it might be annoying having the cabinets in your face while you do the dishes. Currently we have a double sink in a corner cabinet, which Ikea doesn't seem to offer. We'd like to keep the double sink if we can, but for now we've got a 30" sink cabinet which only allows a 1 1/2 sink.

I'd really appreciate any comments or suggestions, especially since this is our first home and we don't have alot of experience with this stuff!

I've attached a jpeg below, and also have posted two plans to the Ikea site:

Thanks a lot,

Mark

Mark,
I'm not one of the talented kitchen gurus around here, but I have seen posts in the Modifications section about creating a corner sink. Yes, you probably cannot do it in the planner since the planner is pretty impaired.

Since you don't have any windows I agree that is is preferable for the sink to be facing an open area. If that ends up being not practical, I'd like to see a drawing of the sink and DW on the range wall, and the range where the DW is.

If you leave the sink where it is, you could use a Perfekt cabinet to the left of the sink which is only 9 inches wide, saving you 3" (I'm assuming you have a 12" there now)... http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...roductId=34233 . My first thought was to put a little bookshelf there, but the Perfekt bookshelf is 12" wide as well. Maybe you - or someone here - could think of a mod to put about an 8" deep bookcase there?

BTW , thank you for posting your drawing. Since I am on a Mac I can't use the planner and it's pretty frustrating when I can't see what most everyone else can!

Thanks for the responses so far. That corner cabinet looks really interesting and not too hard. I'll have to do some measuring to see how it might work for us. Nigel - I'm curious how it might be with a swap of the sink/ DW and range, but we're hoping to keep electrical and plumbing where it is for now, unless we just can't find anything that works. I like the Perfekt mini cabinet idea, since 8" would be about right to fill the space. I'll try it out in the planner.

One thing I noticed last night is that I might not have enough room between the dishwasher and the sink, when the dishwasher door is open. Here's another view (jpeg attached), with the oven section removed from the picture.

Thanks,

Mark

If your sink was on the peninsula, you'd want to think about splashing going behind the sink into the eating area. I posted a couple pictures to show an idea of how it could work with the sink on the wall and some glass cabinets above it. (I made your sink base 36 inches so you can have the double bowl sink.) With the use of a dishwasher, one generally spends more time prepping at the counter than washing at the sink. So you might want to face out while prepping food at the peninsula.

On the corner of the peninsula, I put a cabinet turned around to face the other room instead of the corner cabinet, easier to access storage, I think.

I also put in a 36" fridge and surrounded it with a deep cabinet and a cover panel for a built-in look. You may want to leave a 36" space in case you want to replace your fridge later. Refrigerators smaller than 36" are getting rarer.

Just a few more ideas to bat around. I hope they are helpful.

I've been blogged!
Hi Mark
I did a new plan for you which moves the sink to the wall opposite the range. I used a fan cabinet above so you would have a spot to put something pretty to look on the wall behind the sink. I didn't like the sink on the peninsula, I think it was crowded and would cause splashing.

The plan I did gives you a 30" drawer unit facing the dining room, two 18" drawer units and a 36" drawer unit plus a 24" unit which you can fit with interior drawers. If you want a 36" sink, change that cab to 18" drawers instead. You've got 10 foot ceilings so you could do another layer of cabinets above the wall cabs. The wall cabs I used are the 39" high ones. I think it addresses your concerns and gives you some really functional storage. It also opens up the narrow walkway more.

I saved the plan to your IKEA space, called Eva. Let me know what you think!

Thanks Gloria and Eva! Those are really good ideas, I never really thought about splashing but I think you're right in that it would be a problem. I'm at work now so can't look at the plans until tonight, but will post again when I do. Gloria did you post your plan to my profile on the Ikea site?

Thanks, this is a great forum!

Mark

I hadn't put the plan on your IKEA space but I did just now, per your request. I named it Gloria.

Eva, you and I were posting about the same time and I am just tickled that some of my ideas were similar to yours.

Glad it was helpful. It's fun to play around with kitchen design when I should be doing taxes.

Mark, for what ever it is worth, I grew up in a house with a sink just like your corner configuration, and my parents are still there. In the 38 years they have had their kitchen they have not complained once about splashing from the sink.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the input and ideas on our plan, and thanks to Gloria and Eva for uploading their new plans to the Ikea site. Having some drawers that face the kitchen is a great idea - we like it and have built this into our latest plan (thanks!).

We've been trying different configurations, and have a narrowed it down with some options for the upper wall cabinets. We're thinking of incorporating some glass, and maybe the horizontal glass cabinets (but not sure how functional they are). I can't seem to get these to fit very well using the planner, hopefully they work better in real life.

We're also thinking of switching to Adel Medium Brown since we've almost decided on a natural maple hardwood floor which will be installed just before the kitchen.

I've attached a few more pictures, and uploaded the plans to the Ikea site. Any more suggestions/comments are much appreciated!
