I'm in the midst of a remodel/addition/demolition and am almost ready to order my Ikea kitchen. I am of course new to the site and been doing a lot of research and reading.
The home is a 1949 box in San Francisco and we're modernizing. The back of the house will have a large window and a 12' french door, leading out on to a very large deck with great bay views. The kitchen also has three skylights running down the middle (I haven't drawn them in). That said, the space is bright. The wall between the living room has been knocked down and I'm thinking a large island is appropriate.
Think of the room as an open kitchen/living/dining area. The stove is black and stainless and the dishwasher is black. I'm still trying to decide whether the fridge should be stainless or black. The countertops will be blackish granite. And I haven't decided on a backsplash yet. Flooring in the room is already 2" strip oak (parquet pattern in the living area). I think cork flooring in the kitchen may be appropriate.
Am I insane for going all red, with a splash of glass and some ruberik black glass doors on the island (so that you're not looking a wash of red)?
Any inputs and suggestions are welcome. I promise to post pictures of the finished kitchen...to inspire others to go red!

Project in progress....few pictures attached, but more added to the gallery
Go for the red - it does look stunning with black...although you may not want to place glass doors on the backside of the island - someone sitting there may put their foot through the door .
If you are interested - I have a microwave cabinet design in red, rather than the white that the standard IKEA cabinet offers...
Ooo, ooo, ooo! Can I live vicariously through YOU? So many times folks have said they were going to do AR, and then backed out. I've been so sad. Please, please, please! Do Abstrakt RED!!! My 1930's house in small town America just wouldn't wear it well, but oh how I love it. Swoon... Can I just say that I'd love you forever if you go Red? Yippee!

I agree with all the above. It's such a gorgeous color of red! The black will really keep it from looking garish, and the glass accents will be really nice. Ditto on the island doors. If you could get ahold of some Abstrakt Black doors really quickly, that might be a nice combination (they're being discontinued, as you likely know).
Tough call on the fridge. Black makes sense to me, but stainless would look very high-end. You have an extra fridge-like space to the right of the DW - is that a second fridge?
Glad you're doing this - I can't wait to see it!
Kathy (owner of a huge, glossy red range, so I'm biased)
Wow...that is going to be stunning! I just saw an article in Met Home of an architect's home, he did AR in his kitchen with black counters and it was absolutely gorgeous. I think they called it a Ferrari Kitchen!
if you can find a fridge in the Graphite finish it might really look cool with the contrast in texture. plus it's sort of the love child of black and ss
course maybe not since the whole kitchen is shiny, but i'm in love with the graphite (course I think only a couple manufacturers make it so far... i still heart it)
Besides the red looking very sexy, the whole space just sounds awesome. The deck w/the bay view will be to die for, especially seeing it while cooking!
