Cupboard above stove

We are renovating our kitchen and we are putting a cupboard above the stove and were wondering if there was one that needed to be above teh stove or if we could put any one up there

Thanks

Re: Cupboard above stove

Hi! The issue is less the cabinet and more the distance between the cabinet and the range- both for safety and usability. Here's a link with a good conversation on this topic. If you are installing a microwave over the range, you need to follow those instructions. I would also consult your local building code, which is generally available online from your municpality.

We'd love to see your project!

Re: Cupboard above stove

So do we need to put a vent in as well, not just a cupboard?

Re: Cupboard above stove

That depends upon a few things- your municipalities' rules (vent hood not required by my building code- but make up air is if the fan is above 300CFM) and your desires.

I wouldn't bother if you don't have the wherewithall to truly vent to the outside. I'm strongly considering no vent hood above my Wolf range because I can't stand cluttering up the look. I rarely use my hood today (very loud) and in my new kitchen we have a lot of windows will provide a lot of ventilation.

Hope that helps

Re: Cupboard above stove

In California, we need to have a vent (ducted or not) hood above the range. The bottom of the cabinet (if you are using one) should be 30 inches from the top of the cooktop, and the bottom of the hood should be 24 inches from the top of the cooktop.

I sell park models (mini mobile homes or large drywalled RVs, depending on your point of view) for a living (well among other things, but I digress), and the factory that builds them goes by some code requiring vented hoods above the ranges. I believe it's a state-by-state decision, but the factory just builds all to the strictest code in the nation currently on the books. It could very well be California's code (you know how picky we are!).

hth!
