Discuss drawers vs. pullouts? pros and cons?? on IKEAFANS.com. We're Personalizing the IKEA Experience. drawers vs. pullouts? pros and cons?? - Need help with planning your remodel? Want a kitchen planner to review your ideas? This is the happenin' spot!.
We let the Ikea guy talk us into a 24" base interior that is not going to work well. It has a 24" drawer on the top, then 2 12" doors that open to 2 pullout baskets inside.
We don't like having to open 2 doors to pullout the basket and the 3 kids will make a mess of it. So we have 2 options - change to drawers or do a 24" pull-out modification.
What would you say are the pros and cons about a stack of drawers (either 3 or 4) versus a pull-out unit similar to the 12"? (I've seen the thread on how to do it and it looks clear enough)
Do you mean drawers with fronts, or drawers instead of baskets? I definitely would prefer drawers over baskets, but if you mean drawers with fronts I think drawers will be a bit more functional, since there are less steps involved in using drawers vs. a pullout. What is on either side of the 24" cabinet? If you've got all full slab doors, a pullout might look better aesthetically. If you've got drawers, you will want to line them up.
eva is right about the aesthetics. i also like to think of usage, i really like my mom's base pull out next to her cooktop and will do that in my future kitchen (prolly my thread you're talking about since i tend to announce every little thing i do)
Re: drawers vs. pullouts? pros and cons??
it doesn't require anything special or modifications since the 24 has a deep drawer and rationell deep drawer front.
Boikster also created a pull out using his existing 12" doors for color continuity, it's a cool mod.
Just really depends what you want to do, but a lot is possible with ikea
The picture above is the link I was meaning. I was wondering what the pros and cons of that set-up is versus just a stack of 3 regular drawers. I imagine buying 3 drawer fronts is more expensive that 1 24"x24" door. And the pull-out set up requires you to pull the main pullout everytime you want to access any of the drawers. So what are the benefits?
The aestetic point is a good point. On one side of this 24" base is a 24" pantry unit and the other side is a 15" base with a stack of 4 drawers in it.
It is part of the small snack centre between pantries on 'other' side of the kitchen. (I was having some rendering problems so that cabinet under the bar sink is really red)
In case your interested, here is another view of the 3d plan I was working on. I did these in AutoCAD 3d as part of my school work at the Art Institute. I getting my degree in Interior Design.
This view has the pantry wall removed so we can 'peak' in:
with pullouts vs. drawers you have flexiblity in where the drawers are placed - e.g. have some really tall things - have a deep pullout drawer at the bottom and place the shallow ones above it where you like - to handle the taller items. have lots of shallow items .... just use shallow pullout drawers and add more of them ...
that's the benefit to the interior drawers - the only pullout drawers I have are in my pantry - I wish I had a pullout next to the stove. I have drawers there. I'd prefer the pullout simpy because then I could put some of my tall oils and stuff I use for cooking in the base cab instead of above the stove.

That is a really point about the tall stuff. I'd not thought of that. Definitely a point in favour of the pull-out! Thanks.
We put one of the 12" pull-outs right next to the stove. It should be great for oils, vinegars etc. Plus it might fit rice, pasta and those kind of things that go straight into pots.
The problem with some of our decisions is that this kitchen is so much bigger than the one it is replacing, that my sister really doesn't know how she is going to use the space. It is hard to imagine what you've never had before.
It is hard to imagine what spaces you need for things. That's why I made a list today of all the things I have to put away! Then, I started to assign spaces to them...and started to realize that there things that I had neglected, like where the dog's bowls will go, the big ole bag of dog food, etc.
