In my new kitchen, I was thinking about dedicating an area outside the main cooking are for table setting and dinner clean-up. It would have a small sink, a 2nd dishwasher and dish storage. I already have this sink as my second sink:
It is still perfectly good and could be used again.
My kids are 10 and 7 so they can set and clear the table and load the dishwasher. I was thinking that the 24" pantry I have in the plan below could have lots of drawers. The everyday dishes could be in there to make clean-up and table setting easy. This way the cook can work without extra people under foot.
A great idea...I would swap out the pantry for a base cab and microwave cab above and make yourself a little breakfast/snack station completely outside the main work area. I would probably even swap the dishwasher for a small undercounter fridge. Pop a toaster and a coffeemaker on the countertop and you're all set.
I've always loved butler's pantries, but they only make sense in a formal home where you do a lot of formal dining room entertaining. And who does that anymore? That is a great way to look at it - a Modern take on a Butler's Pantry. I guess that is exactly what I'm going for except instead of a butler, I'll have my 2 kids! LOL

A snack centre is what I did for my sister's Abstrakt Red kitchen we're working on. It has a bar sink, 2nd microwave and coffee maker all there, but outside of the main cooking area. I don't have room for both a snack centre and clean-up centre so I'll have to decide which is more important for our family routine. Kitchens really need to be 20 feet by 20 feet in order to fit everything we want!
We did something similar. We put our dw at our prep sink rather than the main sink (it's closer to the table.) As the table is cleared plates can be scraped into the sink and loaded in the dw. I leave the pots and pans I don't want to put in the dw in the main sink near the range. It's also helpful that one person can start "clean up" of prep dishes while someone else is on the other side of our peninsula cooking. I like having separate zones since I like having helpers in the kitchen that can stay out from under foot.
