Re: Silverware inserts?

zeuss - I know this is an old thread, but I'm just wondering what you ended up with, if anything? We recently got a silver chest as a gift, so those old rolls are just rolling around (thank goodness, I hated them!), but I could use some custom sleeves for specialty pieces, and a large silver tray.

Did you ever purchase something or find the Pacific cloth to make your own?

Re: Silverware inserts?

No I didn't buy any cloth yet. I plan to buy the inserts made of the cloth, but with the dividers. Then a sheet of cloth lays over top.

I plan to have 2 drawers for all my silver because I'm up to a ridiculous 21 place settings. And I have expanded place settings up to 12 - including appetizer forks, ice tea spoons, soup spoons, butter knives, 5 o'clock teas, etc. etc. My most recent purchase was a Lemon Fork - because you never know when you might really need one. I have cream soup spoons, but I hope to collect more boullion soup spoons - they are smaller. But they are rarer. But the weirder the piece, the more I covet it!!!

Re: Silverware inserts?

This one looks even easier to use. It is Reed and Barton rather than Hagerty.
  • 17.5" long x 13 7/8" wide x 2.5" high
  • Holds up to 120 pieces including 24 knives
and a smaller one
  • 11.75" long x 15" wide x 2.5" high
  • Holds up to 108 pieces

Re: Silverware inserts?

The zippered ones don't look as easy to use.

except during barbeque weather, we use the silver once a week at least, for Sunday's dinner. It has to be easy.

Re: Silverware inserts?

I was thinking about putting the silver in the island (closer to the dining table) or in the butler's pantry area (closer to the dishwasher)

In one area, I have 24" drawers to work with, while in the other, I have 18" drawers. I'm not sure which will work better.

Re: Silverware inserts?

Where can I find out how big a 24" drawer and an 18" drawer actually are?

Holds 24 knives sounds like a lot, but I have seafood knives, butter knives, luncheon knives, dinner knives. I have no idea how many that adds up to??

Re: Silverware inserts?

OK - I went overboard and did a spatial analysis of the 2 sizes of inserts. I liked these best because there was no unrolling or unzipping required.

So I took the large and small silverware insert and tried to fit them into an 18" drawer and a 24" drawer. The actual drawer size is shown below.

It looks like the large silverware insert is almost a perfect fit for the 18" drawer, if I put it in sideways. That shouldn't be a problem since Ikea drawers are full extension.

The question is - should I stack them 2 high? They are only 2 1/2" high. Two could easily stack. But then you can't get at the bottom one very easily.

I wonder if 2 of those large units in 2 drawers will fit all my silver. It says 120 pieces each, but weird pieces like asparagus servers take up a lot of space. I'd hate to have to give up 3 drawers!

Re: Silverware inserts?

More info - I'm going to get these, I think

Features 24 slots for Knives (or 12 knives and 12 butter spreaders) and 8 deep slots for other pieces.

An elegant way to store your silver in a sideboard, buffet or kitchen drawer. Features a rigid bottom with brown fabric lining and cloth cover. Lining and cover are made of tarnish resistant silverware cloth.

Re: Silverware inserts?

Oooohh, nice. Looks like you lose a lot of space in the 24" drawer. Are these the ones that will fit in the smaller drawer?
