I have a 9'6" by 5'5" kitchen and I want to maximize the amount of space I have. I would love to put in a dishwasher and would like to know whether it is possible to place an under-sink dishwasher below an undercounter mounted sink. Has anyone done this using the ikea sink base cabinets? If so, how did it turn out? Thanks!
Although I can't comment on your specific question, I know some one who is well versed in the install process will respond to your post.

In the interim, you may want to start looking at options for dishwashers. I thought I was all set with my choice, but there are so many things to take into consideration these days in selecting a dishwasher, that it may not be as easy as it appears to be. In trying to save space there are also 18 inch d/
w
that may be better suited to you.
When we redid our kitchen at our old house (8x8 with 2 doors and a window!), I looked into under-the-sink dishwashers. At that time they were not very well made. Perhaps better ones are available now.
I also looked at 18 inchers and there was one made by Miele, pricey, but good. I also looked at the single dishdrawers (Fischer Paykel--sp? and I think someone else makes those now too). I even contemplated a single drawer installed under the sink, which looked possible to me.
(We ended up painting the cabinets so we were stuck with a regular 24 inch dishwasher opening and got a Bosch.)
I don't know much about installing them, but I was able to find instructions on a GE model. It looks like all you have to be concerned about is the depth of the sink and where the plumbing is. In the instructions for this one, the bowl of the sink can only come down 6" from the bottom of the counter. I think this is why most people use a drop in instead of an undermount. If you do a drop in, you get the thickness of the counter in your bowl too, for a total of maybe 7-7.5 inches. With an undermount, you'd need a 6" deep sink, which might be hard to find. Here's a link to the instructions:
22-1/2" in width means it should fit inside a 24" sink base and <18" in height means that there is still room above it for the sink.
edit: there was one review that I ran across somewhere that I've since couldn't find back, but that they did install this as a built-in and that it was fine pumping the wastewater up to drain.
