My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

I've been learning Sketch-Up for the last 3 weeks in my 3D modeling class for my Interior Design degree and I had to try it out on my kitchen plans. So here is a few samples of a couple models I've been working on.

First here is my house from the outside:

Now here is an overview of the main floor:

Here is the view up the hall from the front door:

A closer look at my Clean-up & table setting zone and the banquette

and a view of the island

There are so many other views I could show, but this is a ton to get started with. Tell me what you think......

Re: My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

The Kitchen Zone by Zone

Prep. and Cooking Zone- all drawers in the island for every food prep need from pots to spices. Extra sink with disposal for peelings etc. and draining pasta.

Table setting and Table clearing zone - all the dishes etc. will be in drawers in the 24" pantry so the kids can do this job independently. China and silver will also be kept in this area instead of space wasting china cabinets.

Food storage Zone- store the cold food and room temp food near each other

Snack and Breakfast Zone - keep snack foods, bread, peanut butter, cereals, and coffee stuff all together so family members can prepare snacks and things without being in the cook's main area.

Clean Up Zone - a deep sink and 2nd dishwasher for cleaning up food prep stuff, baking bowls, and snack making mess. (Instead of a regular dishwasher, a single dishwasher drawer would work great)

Baking Zone - a appliance garage house mixer and the pantry has all the baking supplies in drawers. I would have liked more room, but what can you do. There will also be a white trim kit around the convection/micro in the oven cabinet. Oven cabinet is very near food prep area.

Socializing Zone- one of my biggest items in my mission statement is a place for friends and family to hang out. By raising the bar height, safety issues surrounding the stove are solved. Hopefully a good fan will deal with the steam etc.

Laundry Zone- down the hall in the powder room with 15" pullouts for extra conceiled storage.

Re: My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

What a lovely, well-thought out plan! I'd want that kitchen!

I had no idea that in the right hands Sketch-Up was so powerful.

Thanks for sharing!

Re: My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

Thanks guys. Sketch Up can be a lot of fun, but it is often 'too easy' if that makes any sense. It is great for quick drawings, but it is hard to be super accurate and it isn't photo realistic. Next term, I start on real rendering using a version of AutoDesk's 3D Max called Viz. The renderings are amazing, but can take 22 hours for the computer to render!

I used the Ikea cabinets frames that were in the public 3D warehouse and just put a plain front on them. Then I painted them in Fagerland paint. I haven't gone through and illustrated where drawers are etc. Nor do I have door and drawer pulls. That seemed too fussy to try.

Re: My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

absolutely agree, too fussy for what you are doing, i think these renderings are great to really get a sense of the design elements and how they work together.

Re: My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

I agree with the others - that's quite impressive! I can't even get that stupid program to let me do some simple stuff! I wanted to set the dimensions for a box that would represent my kitchen, and couldn't even figure out how to do that, and I'm a reformed computer geek! Obviously, I gave up too quickly - you've done a heck of a job!

Re: My kitchen design using Sketch-Up

It is a great program for getting a sense of spatial relations and sightlines. I really wanted to get a sense of what the space will be like with the kitchen wall gone and an island in its place. I was afraid people arriving at the front door would feel they are walking right into the kitchen and not feel compfortable. I really know now that I'm going to like it and that it is going to work just fine.
