Hello, everyone!

I'm wondering about an idea I had regarding my upper cabinets. I am considering using 39" cabinets instead of 30". It would reduce the dust catching space over the cabinets. It means less "display" space, but I can work on that. (Susan had suggested glass doors on top and solid doors on the bottom as one option.)

If you would be so kind as to give me some feedback on my kitchen design, I would greatly appreciate it. Someday I will learn to post them here! However, for now, please go to the Ikea kitchen planner and retrieve my plans:

Look at "first try 2" for the 30" option, and "trythemtoceiling" for the 39" option. I threw in an Ikea over the range hood for the moment, although my fervent hope is to use a micro/hood combo there. However, in both versions at the moment, the cabinet over the range leaves a BIG gap between itself and the ceiling. Does that look really odd, or is it just me? My kitchen is a dust and grease trap, so over the stove is the LAST place I want room for that to collect!

(By the way, if you notice there is no dishwasher in at least one of the plans. It should be to the immediate right of the sink. I took it out to play around a bit, and because the Ikea one doesn't quite work. My DW is 24" wide, and the Ikea one is just smaller enough that it makes the planner fight me on a few things. For one thing, it won't let me put a countertop in over the DW!)

Any opinions/critiques/shouts of approval/screams of horror are, as always, greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Emmie

I like them all the way to the ceiling. You can get a taller fan cabinet, so that might work. Otherwise, build a chase, kind of a mini soffit, to enclose the space above.

I vote for the taller cabinets as well.

How much clearance do you have between the cabinets at the bottom left corner? Is that the main entrance/exit? To the mudroom, right? And assumedly, to the driveway/car? The path through which all groceries (not to mention the hungry hoardes) will travel? Do you have enough clearance there?

I like this one best also.

Oh...I forgot. About the over fridge cabinet --- hang it up high like the other cabinets, and then do a shelf, like Kathy did underneath, or maybe wine cubbies (Check out the Modifications page on the Fansite...you're looking for wine cubbies in Adel MB, by jordanl)? Enclose the fridge with the full panels for a more finished look.

Thanks, everybody! The more I think about it, the more like the cabinets to the ceiling also.

The planner is bickering with me again, and refuses to give me a total cost, but I can go back and do it by hand. We got our tax return, and DJ got his annual bonus, so I am in high planning mode with money in the bank!

Susan: you are correct, that is the main entrance to/from the mudroom and front hallway. In fact, on this rendition I left out the little partial wall that is there. I will go back and put it in now. It's a little snug, but that configuration is exactly what we have now. We are kinda used to it. If you think of something different, I'd love to hear it, but I think we have to go with this.

And thanks for the idea about the shelf over the fridge!
