i'm perplexed. i don't know what i was thinking when i designed this element and now i can't figure out how to make it work.
here's a picture. it's not completely accurate because of ikea planner issues.
the actual plan was to put the 18" cabinet right on top of the base cabinet. this will be an appliance garage and there is already wiring installed for this purpose.
above it would be an empty cubby to hold the microwave.
so, the problem is the right hand side by the counter....the cabinet box from the 18" cabinet will show.
do i have any other optino for this set up than to ge a tall cover panel, split it in half long ways and use that, sitting on the countertop?
i thought i could do some neat finish on the side of the cabinet? maybe extend the backsplash around onto it?
I think I understand how it's gonna work, but I'm not sure if your cubby is made w/a cab box and no doors or if it's just gonna be a space left between the cab sitting on the counter and the one on the wall.
I wouldn't extend the backsplash onto the cab side. I think it might look like you were trying to hide something since none of your other areas of backsplash will be positioned on cabs.
I don't think you'd have to use a tall cover panel, but I think I would use one. That would definitely finish off the side. However it would push the cab next to it over 5/8ths of an inch (I think that's how thick a normal cover panel is). Would that extra space cause a problem w/the other upper cabs? Of course if you did use a tall cover panel (floor to top of upper cab) then that could push everything to the left and keep your uppers lined up w/the bases.
Overall, if you have room to the left, I'd add the thin cover panels from top to bottom for a finished look.

the cubby is just an empty space..no cabinet. i was going to use cut down cover panels to line the inside of the cubby (well, the top and the bottom, if i do the side cover panels).
the only issue with using a tall cover panel is that i'm just a tad bit off between the top and the bottom. the cover panel beside the dishwasher is about oh, 1/4 (at most) inch further to the left than the cabinet above it. in theory i think i can get enough "Bend" out of the tall pane to make it work.
i'm going to have to hire someone to cut the panel for me though..i don't think i can do that long of a cut with my hand saw.

Does that mean that the alignment between the uppers and bases at the end of the run is also off by 1/4"? (and if so, I take it you no longer have a top-to-bottom cover panel as shown in the planner diagram at the end of the run?)
At any rate--I think you should just nail on some beadboard everywhere you see exposed cabinet frames.
<insert psycho-hacker horror movie sound effect>
well crap, i hadn't though about it being off on the other side.
i supremely screwed this up, eh?
i suppose i could loosen all the uppers and slide the over a bit....of course, that's going to be no fun since i already loaded them all up with food and dishes!
lying in bed, unable to sleep i think i've decided to give up on the idea of "Behind doors" appliance garage.
the main reason i wanted that is ugly electrical. the kitchen wall is cinder block so i couldn't really put in new outlets, so what i did was run the electrical up through a channe and into a wall mounted box. i wanted that hidden behind the wall.
so, i think what i'm going to do is lower the electrical box so it will be below the countertop level. then i'll extend the countertop over, as it appears in the above picture. my microwave can actually be mounted below the cabinets, so it will go below the 24" cabinet and the toaster oven and coffee pot will just sit on the counter below. i'll have an access hole cut at the back of hte counter so the cords can go below to the outlet.
it will also solve my backsplash dilemna as i think the only real option now is to just paint it the wall color....
Whaat kind of backspash are you using? Could you build up the wall around the channel so you don't see it (i.e., it's covered with backsplash)? Or, if your backsplash is thick enough, could you cut a corresponding groove in it?
i really don't know if i can do a backsplash since, in the new plan, the far end will just open up to the main wall. i guess i could just "end" the backsplash even with the cabinets...but that requires really perfect alignment, which i don't think i have.
OK, could you move the channel over so it's in line with the ends of the cabinets, creating an artificial boundary? You could paint the channel then, and undermount the power outlets under the top cabinets.
i could...i'm not a huge backsplash person actually. i think i'll probably just paint it like the rest or the kitchen.
i think i'll lower the outlet box so it's actually behind the base cabinet. i'll cut access in the back of the base cabinet. maybe i can do a wiremold outlet strip...hhhmmmmm.
