I was led to this picture via another thread and I noticed this corner cabinet at an angle, which I really liked.
Anyone think this is possible using just an IKEA cabinet/door - modifying it or adapting the carcass ourselves? Or would it be necessary to build your own custom cabinet? And what about the fact IKEA kitchens are not framed? How would that work?
And what about butcher block above it - how would that be fitted?
Anyone done this or any other unusual corner ideas?
I don't have answers to any of your questions :? but did you notice that there are no toekicks in this kitchen? It sure will make it hard to stand right next to the counter to do prep work since there is no room for toes.
I'm guessing that you wouldn't be able to use the ikea butcherblock easily unless you used the wider chunks that were meant for an island and cut them down, or if you were okay with a strange triangle-shaped piece. Would it look too awful to have a different surface in the corner, like tile, and butcherblock on either side? Probably. Hmmmm....
I've thought of two options for this setup, since I like that diagonal corner look as well. One is to use a single custom cabinet and the hinges and door for the ikea upper corner cabinet. The other is to just use the upper corner cabinet as a base cabinet, the same way you can use the wall cabinets as shallow base or island cabs. You'd lose a 12" strip along the back, but this is often not well-utilized space anyway.
The limiting factor in modifying a cabinet would be the Ikea door size width, and you would want a wider door for interior access.Â* I would carefully studyÂ*Ikea's wall cabinet version (available in the North
America
, but in the
UK
?) for construction, and then using the Pythagorean theorum, you'll have an pretty good idea of the approximate carcase dimensions that would fit the door. Here in the states, common base cab dimensions for the two sides along the back wall meeting in the corner are about 36"x36", and the side dimensions are about 24", normal cabinet depth. These translate roughly as 91cm x 91cm by 61 cm. I think UK depths are typically 60 cm?Â* I would call some companies in the UK that build carcases, give them the dimensions of the Ikea door that you've selected, and compare their cost of making the carcase with your efforts to modify one, or possibly two Ikea cabs for the carcase. Would you have to purchase a table saw and/or the special blades for particleboard/melamine applications? Over here, those blades are expensive. On this web site, there are Ikea fans who are very experienced with the use of table saws, and they could tell you what special equipment/tools that you would need. You may also need a special hinges for diagonal doors. Ikea uses them for the wall version, but you would have to research whether they would be adequate for the the weight of your base cabinet door. Blum manufacturers an ususual drawer system made for a diagonal cabinet.Â*http://www.blum.com/usa/en/03/01/05/...YMu9gigl5Bu:-1
