Where to put the microwave?

After posting my first draft, I've completely reworked it, all while trying 3 completely different layouts, and have it so that I'm pretty close to being happy with it. ... And then I realized that I forgot the microwave. Now, I know that I can always just put it on the countertop on the window wall, but was hoping that someone would have another suggestion.

I'm also debating on extending the peninsula with another 24-30" drawer cabinet, but am worried about the impact on walking around it. Any opinions?

I'm also open to any additional review/critiques that you may have, so please feel free to let me know any thoughts, even if they are unrelated to my questions.

Some additional information on my plan: the pennisula is going to have a counter top overhang, so that we can put seating there.

The other side of the peninsula is open to the dining room, the right of the kitchen is open to the living room.

This is a version '08 guide file so I've also attached an image.

My mission statement is:
I want my kitchen to be easy to use both by myself and with my growing children. I want it to be warm and inviting, with plenty of clear counter space, and no unnecessary distractions. I want to feel ready to get to work when I walk into it because everything is in it's place and all the tools are within reach.

TIA ,
Melissa

Re: Where to put the microwave?

For the microwave, my first instinct would be to place it in a wall cabinet next to the left of the windows.

With your open floor plan I would be reluctant to close it further with a 24 or 30 inch cabinet.

Re: Where to put the microwave?

You could have a 24" W base cabinet as part of the peninsula with a microwave on a shelf then a deep drawer beneath.

I would leave at least 48" passageway at the end of the peninsula, more if you think there will be lots of people in and out. Can you mock it up with cardboard boxes to see how it feels?

Does your refrigerator door need any space next to the wall to open all the way (to remove drawers, etc.)?

Don't forget cover panels on the exposed sides of cabinets.
