Mantle range hood

Can anyone tell me how to create a mantle-style range hood and surround? This would be where the hood is completely disguised by a wood mantle surround. I don't know what type of hood to buy for this style, either. We are planning to vent it out the wall, if that makes it any clearer. I'd like the hood/mantle surround to be 36" and they would be for a 30" range. The range has ended up being my kitchen focal point and I really like the mantle-style surrounds that I've seen, but I have zero idea how to create one or what type of hood goes inside it. Thanks!

Links that show something like what I'd like to achieve w/the hood (though I don't want it to be as fancy):

Re: Mantle range hood

OK....that is an easy style to replicate! You would need some custom woodwork but with the shaker styling it shouldn't be too costly. Basically you want to frame out a box that will go around a hood liner (the guts of the hood without the outside skin) and you'd want to trim it out to match your cabinets. I imagine with the simpler style of Adel you won't want fancy corbels or carved adornments, right?

So...you'll need to get the specs for your hood liner, then figure out what size box needs to go around it, and you'd probably want birch ply for the facing. You'll also want to match the finish, which is probably just a satin poly with no stain, so you'll want to get extra material to experiment with.

The second pic shows a cabinet above with a trim piece below, so you could also do something like that and simply use toekick or birch ply with trim underneath it.

You'd probably mount the box with cleats to the wall, and something similar with the extended trim under a cabinet.

HTH!

Re: Mantle range hood

So the type of hood I'm looking for is called a hood liner? Thanks for that info!

Since we're looking to vent the hood out the back wall instead of the roof, there won't be any need to hide the venting tube in a cabinet. Would it look weird just to have the mantle box on the wall w/o cabinetry around it?

Re: Mantle range hood

I would think you'd want the box to go to the same height as the cabinets on either side.

Re: Mantle range hood

I don't have cabinets on either side of the range, that's why I was considering just the mantle hood alone. I attached a layout of the design so far both with a more "regular" hood cabinet config and something that will sort of resemble the mantle config. I can't get the cab above the fridge (in case you're wondering why it's on the floor).

Last night I was leafing through a design book and saw a stove/range actually installed inside a huge old fireplace--that was pretty cool!!! The way my range is now, I have a hard time accessing the cabinets around it so that's why I thought maybe I didn't need to bother with them at all. However, as that wall is what you see when looking into the kitchen, and is a focal point, I'd like it to be pretty and balanced as well as functional.
