A dumpster was delivered on Saturday. The last few back ordered pieces were picked up from Ikea on Sunday. DH and I were up LATE last night trying to get the kitchen and breakfast room emptied and turning the dining room into our kitchen/breakfast room/pantry. I was also furiously cooking up things that I could freeze and whip out for meals that only need to be microwaved and grilled (oh and chocolate chip cookies for DS' special snack day - oy!). Tony, our contractor, arrived bright and early this morning to start demoing the kitchen - whooppeee!
2 days in....how's it going? We want the nitty gritty (even if you have to wipe it off your sandwich first!) details!

Well, there are three additional demo pictures on my Flickr set. Today it didn't look like a lot got done but the fact that all my faucets sputtered when I turned them on and it looked like the basement floor got a whole lot of wet indicates that he was working on plumbing.
Freakily, yesterday on 06-06-06, they were working and turned around to find a 120-pound Rottweiler had walked into the kitchen through the open garage and garage door! Just as quietly as he came in, he left. The contractor said that after having watched "The Omen" when he was younger and the fact that it was 06-06-06 - they were a little wigged out! I'm hoping it's not a bad sign.
My brother-in-law stopped by with a piece of the flooring to see what he's going to have to put underneath the flooring, if anything, and to walk through how they're going to feather in the new floor with the old. Luckily, there's only about a 3' area where they're going to have to do the feathering - the rest will be under the cabinets. In ??? years someone can curse me for not going to the trouble of feathering in all the way across.
DH and I (well, mostly DH) have been putting together cabinets in the evening while we watch tv. So far - so good.
After much discussion on installing a pull-out broom closet, we've decided to build one. I bought an extra 80" cover panel last night at IKEA for Tony to rip down to make a front panel for it.
Most of what he's been doing has been behind the scenes - plumbing and electrical. Unfortunately, the two ceilings are different heights so we're having to add an unforeseen cost to the budget - a sheetrocker. He's going to come in and match the former den's ceiling to the kitchen ceiling which is lower. That's about $1100 we weren't budgeting on- gulp - buh bye backsplash, for now.
The floors were supposed to be installed yesterday but the crew is Brazilian and yesterday afternoon was a national holiday because Brazil was playing in the World Cup. Seriously. I'm torn because I used to live in Brazil and I completely understand the love of football but I WANT MY FLOORS!! WAAAAHHHHH!!!
I bought all the handles for the drawers and pull-outs - DRAG clear. I was only able to purchase 1 set of the DRAG knobs in clear because that's all that my Ikea had. I'll check later in the week and if they don't have them, I may have my mom pick some up at the Elizabeth IKEA on her way back from work (she works in NJ but lives in CT - don't ask - it's bizarre). DH does not love the handles but I've convinced him to live with ita while and if he absolutely hates them to pieces, we'll get new ones.
All the cabinet carcasses are made and we're slowly working on building drawers. We're having some difficulty with the base pull-outs because we have the incorrect template for the 12" pull-out as some other folks did and neither of us had the collective brain power to want to figure it out last night LOL. We both just kept reading the posts on how to fix it over and over and over and then went to bed.
That's about it. I'm so hoping to come home today and unfinished wood floors.
WE HAVE FLOORS! Who knew I could be so excited? My oldest is obviously excited as he seems to be doing the "new floors dance!" You can see that they've feathered the new floors (the lighter wood) into the older floors. They'll come back later to sand and poly everything.
From the other direction
And potential backsplash option with paint sample and counter top sample on top of drawer front
Seriously, that's the shade of green I love so much...and we decided to go with aqua and I've having withdrawals from my lovely green! That frosted glass is amazing. It's going to look so cool and sophisticated!
Wow what great progess! Your floors are going to be gorgeous - I love wood.
The tile is a great green. You usually only see that brick shaped tile ( is it called subway tile?) is gloss white. Is sand-blasted or coated with something to get that matte look? I love beach glass look tiles.
Oooh, I wish I could see! I saw the photos earlier in the thread, but not these. Does anyone have any suggestions? I looked in both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer and both just show a blank line.
ps I'd especially like to see that "new floors dance"
